    our bags and all five of us into a taxi and headed 4km away to the jungle village of El Panchan next to the entrance to the park where the Palenque archaeolgical site is located A phone reservation had been made at the cabins of Margarita and Ed Rooms were cheap clean and mosquito free and the famed restaurant Don Mucho s in the complex provided well priced and tasty fare for the weary travellers Whilst some of us caught up on sleep Mariano got on the case of chatting to locals visiting town and checking out opportunities for the group and soon we had a couple of volunteer options for us to visit We were joined by a fellow traveller César from Panama and we first walked to the site for the forthcoming Mother Earthship festival taking place in December We were welcomed by a couple from the USA who were getting the basics set up for the party and they invited us to pitch tent there and help out with the preparations Then we walked a couple of kilometers out of the village to the home of the owners of an organic products shop and restaurant in Palenque that Mariano had previously popped into Hailing from Venezuela and Mexico City proprietors Karen and Oscar had moved to the area two months previously and bought a beautiful piece of land with family house three round cabañas small round dwellings with thatched roofs water electricity and a good sized swimming pool They were very welcoming and offered all 6 of us to stay in one cabaña tents or hammocks in exchange for helping them to prepare the place for opening for guests at the beginning of December We were most happy to accept the offer The next days were spent doing a variety of jobs on site Mariano got busy making some wooden tables for the guest cabañas whilst others cleaned and prepared the lodgings and outside kitchen We also discussed with the owners ways to implement permaculture techniques on site including making composting bins a small veggie garden and a composting toilet Talks on ecological themes at dinner time with local friends of the owners Marco and Pedro were proving interesting as Pedro is part of a group who are redeveloping a wetland area very close to the centre of Palenque We made arrangements to visit the area the next day A definite highlight of our time in the area was a visit to the famous Mayan temples and ruins of Palenque This incredible site set in the tropical jungle was literally mind blowingly beautiful and one of the most fascinating places we d ever seen We did a group connection session and short meditation to lock down our energy here for 2012 Several hours were spent enjoying wandering around the various temples climbing the structures admiring the stunning views and getting off the beaten track in the forest There we found a small path leading down to the
