  • IK4-IKERLAN displays in Amsterdam its leadership in the field of dependable embedded systems
    electronic circuit boards 65 kg of leads and 1 100 electronic connectors The market is demanding more and more features of this type and the industry needs sustainable strategies to be able to offer them to it IK4 IKERLAN stands out as an international benchmark in the so called mixed criticality technologies which enable all the functions to be incorporated with fewer electronic systems including those linked to security safety That means it would be possible to go on increasing their functions by reducing the weight volume consumption and cost of embedded systems Returning to the above mentioned car example a dozen electronic circuit boards 10 kg of leads and about 100 connectors could suffice HIPEAC Conference 2015 One of the most important events in Europe relating to mixed criticality embedded systems is being held in Amsterdam today 19 January It is a meeting being organised by the HIPEAC the European network devoted to promoting excellence in this field and the leaders of the five most important European projects in this field MultiPARTES DREAMS PROXIMA EMC2 and CONTREX As the coordinator of one of them and participant in another two IK4 IKERLAN will be one of the most prominent players in this conference which will be sharing the results of the projects the latest knowledge generated and the future perspectives of the participants The importance of this event is endorsed by two pieces of data firstly the sum of the budgets of the five projects is in the region of 100 million euros which gives an idea of the importance that the EU is attaching to this field Secondly the event will be attended by more than 100 researchers from over 60 institutions in industry academia and research IK4 IKERLAN has for years been collaborating with companies to produce applications of this type for products in the areas of energy transport industry healthcare and the home Thanks to its experience the centre is a leading player in the significant investment being made by the European Commission and companies in this field The European projects The three projects that IK4 IKERLAN is participating in will be concluded in 2017 and are being funded by the European Union s 7th Framework Programme The consortia promoting them comprise companies universities and research centres MultiPARTES aims to develop a platform that will incorporate embedded systems for control purposes with varying degrees of criticality it will be possible to deploy them in spheres like video devices the aerospace sector and wind energy In addition to IK4 IKERLAN which is leading the project another eight European organisations are participating in it The centre s functions in this initiative include identifying industry s requirements contributing its own experience in the area of dependability and the development of a new hardware platform among other things DREAMS will be seeking to simplify the production process reduce the development deadlines and facilitate the processes to certify the electronic systems It is hoped that these measures will lead to a lower

  • The EU is funding 3 projects with IK4-IKERLAN’s participation to conduct research into advanced manufacturing
    of European industry and they have the prominent participation of Basque companies Advanced manufacturing is one of the strategic areas which the EU is promoting with the greatest strength within Horizon 2020 Likewise together with energy and biosciences it is one of the priority spheres of action specified by the Government of the Basque Autonomous Community within its RIS3 strategy of intelligent specialisation to enable the Basque Autonomous Community to win competitiveness in Europe IK4 IKERLAN and advanced manufacturing IK4 IKERLAN has a long trajectory in the field of advanced manufacturing Not without reason because for years it has been collaborating with companies in the quest for strategies that ensure maximum efficiency in production and logistics processes For this it is developing and applying specific technologies that enable companies to make use of their resources and obtain maximum possible output One of the aspects in which the Centre is working most intensively is that of smart maintenance in other words the applying of new sensor based technologies communications data capture and processing and decision making to ensure that a component piece of equipment or system continues to perform the functions it was designed for This discipline allows companies to achieve the greatest possible productivity of their resources For example to maximise a machine s output it is fitted with sensors that provide information on its status at any moment That way it is possible to know exactly when a part will need to be changed and to programme any intervention thus remaining a step ahead of a possible fault or adjusting its functioning parameters so that it uses less energy The IK4 IKERLAN researcher Eduardo Saiz believes that advanced manufacturing is a rapidly growing activity which signifies a great opportunity for the Basque economy Thanks to it companies can improve their competitiveness and generate new spaces for business since products that have more availability are more dependable and have more functionalities are going to be generated he explained As he pointed out advanced manufacturing increases the value that companies can offer the market Not only can they supply more advanced products but also new services associated with them The awarding of the three above mentioned projects is tremendous recognition by the EU of IK4 IKERLAN as an important player in the field of advanced manufacturing and will allow the Centre to increase by more than 1 2 million euros its already significant returns from Europe The projects CREMA is an initiative that seeks to develop a cloud computing tool that gathers data in real time about a company s machines analyses them and offers solutions to make the most appropriate decisions relating to the functioning of the machines Its aim is to solve incidences in the most efficient way possible by coordinating the action of the various players involved heads of production line operatives maintenance personnel etc C2NET is an initiative destined to develop applications and a cloud infrastructure to monitor in real time the flow of materials between a

  • IK4-IKERLAN to train experts in energy-efficient smart structures
    performance safety or functionality This initiative is part of the Marie Curie programme devoted to encouraging the geographic mobility of European researchers and is being funded by the European Union s 7th Framework Programme The thesis scheduled to be co supervised by IK4 IKERLAN within the framework of the new network will focus on implementing methods to extract and reuse all the possible energy from environmental vibration New energy efficient transducers used in energy control and storage will be developed and new autonomous control systems designed to cut noise vibration and energy consumption starting from the reduction in structural mass will be specified The integrity and reliability of the structures will be guaranteed by means of specific monitoring methods The rules of entry for the theses of the members of the ANTARES network will be posted on http ec europa eu euraxess The training network will foster the mobility of the researchers by helping them to participate in courses run by the various members of the consortium Multidisciplinary training will also be highlighted Participating in this network alongside IK4 IKERLAN are important universities top level research centres and leading companies in their sectors like KU Leuven UniUD ISVR IDS LBF TNO or LMS The partners in the academic and research ambits provide a broad range of approaches with respect to research and training capacity in addition to the possibility of running courses geared towards all the participants in the network so that they can share their knowledge The industrial partners for their part are offering ANTARES specific applications presenting challenges associated with the smart structures on which research will be carried out According to Óscar Salgado the officer in charge of the project at IK4 IKERLAN the centre is being offered a tremendous opportunity to work with organisations across the

  • IK4-IKERLAN research wins the 2014 Eolo Prize for Innovation
    wind turbines are subjected to which means the materials have to endure less wear and tear This entails savings in maintenance and an increase in the service life of several of the key components of the wind turbine blades tower or drivetrain achieving as much as a 10 increase in some of them This is in fact the main reason why the panel of judges have picked the work of the IK4 IKERLAN researcher because they believe it addresses two important aspects for the wind energy sector the considerable cut in maintenance costs and the achieving of a longer service life of the components that form the wind turbine Díaz de Corcuera s PhD thesis deals with the design of wind turbine controllers capable of adapting to the conditions in other words mainly wind speed better than conventional ones The controller is the device that monitors the conditions and controls the rotation and orientation mechanisms of the turbine What the IK4 IKERLAN researcher has come up with is a controller equipped with a function that measures the conditions the wind turbine has to contend with and seeks by means of mathematical algorithms optimum position and movement so that the least possible load has to be withstood in such circumstances As the towers get higher and higher and the blades bigger and bigger wind turbines are being subjected to greater loads so it is essential to look at ways of reducing the stresses and the vibrations associated with them explained Díaz de Corcuera The ideas he has put forward have been tested in wind turbine simulators set up on dry land Furthermore IK4 IKERLAN is working together with the company Alstom Renovables on a project that is now at a very advanced stage and in which these methods are being applied
