  • SMEs move their logistics to the cloud
    and operational inefficiencies in their supply chains C2Net is being funded by Horizon 2020 the EU programme supporting R D and has a budget of over 7 million euros It is part of the Factories of the future initiative devoted to developing high added value technologies for the so called factories of the future Specifically the tools that will be developed aim to set up collaborative business scenarios so that this networked management can help companies incorporate innovation and improve their global competitiveness These applications will be capable not only of monitoring in real time the flow of materials between plants suppliers and customers but also to calculate the best possible option that is in the interests of the companies involved For example through the developments scheduled to be carried out in C2Net it will be possible to monitor in real time unscheduled events like a delay in the supply of a certain material the downtime of a machine or a variation in demand at consumption points Once the information has been analysed the optimisation tools will propose new supply production or distribution plans designed to minimise the impact on costs and maximise the use of logistic resources and service provided to the customer The C2Net project will be launched on 1 January 2015 and will go on for 3 years Besides IK4 IKERLAN another 20 organisations from 6 European countries are participating all led by the company Atos IT Solutions and Services Supporting SMEs SMEs do not tend to have sufficient resources to develop or acquire specific computing programs that will enable them to optimise their supply chains and have them always under control as a result of having information in real time about what is going on in them That is why the C2Net project will be developing

  • IK4-IKERLAN presents a paper at the inauguration of the Battery Innovation Center in Brussels

  • IK4-IKERLAN is presenting its research into electricity storage systems at the sector’s most important European forum
    in its activity both with respect to its work for companies and its research work In its relations with companies feature the Liftion and AEC projects The former was carried out in collaboration with the Grupo Orona and was used to develop an energy storage system for lifts it is based on lithium ion batteries and enables the contracted power to be reduced In the case of AEC a project carried out in collaboration with the company Urban Art IK4 IKERLAN participated in the development of a series hybrid bus based on a multifuel combustion engine CNG LPG or diesel and an ultracapacitor bank to store electrical energy The work of the Basque R D centre involved designing and developing the vehicle s traction unit as well as its energy control strategy As regards the European research projects being led by IK4 IKERLAN two will be featured REEMAIN devoted to improving the energy efficiency of industry through the intelligent deployment of renewable energies resource saving strategies and an advanced industrial energy model and Batteries 2020 which is seeking to improve the batteries destined for electric vehicles and prepare these batteries for a second lease of life as accumulators for renewable energy facilities The paper The R D centre will be giving a paper explaining its experience in working with battery component manufacturers and companies that fit battery based storage systems into their final developments In the first case IK4 IKERLAN will be highlighting the knowledge it has on the economic and technical requirements of the various applications We have our own methodology to guarantee the dependability of the systems explained Villarreal What is more the centre s knowledge of the market enables it to advise its customers as to which applications are of greater commercial interest In the second case the IK4 IKERLAN centre will be explaining its capability in integrating the various components into the batteries by carrying out in addition an advanced analysis of their dependability safety and behaviour in a range of applications and of their useful service life We are capable of integrating anything from a storage cell to a battery system for a train or lift this enables us to work for companies of very different sizes and in very different fields affirmed the researcher Villarreal is hoping that IK4 IKERLAN s presence at the Eurobat AGM Forum 2014 will help the centre to establish relations with other players in the sector What we have ahead of us is a tremendous opportunity to make ourselves known among cutting edge companies in this field and also to find out what their challenges and needs are he said About the Eurobat AGM Forum 2014 The meeting being organised in Brussels by Eurobat the European association of battery manufacturers will help to put suppliers customers and policy decision makers relating to the sector in contact with each other Furthermore the symposium will be dealing with three main hubs firstly various experts will be explaining their points of view

  • A piece of research by IK4-IKERLAN, CEIT-IK4 and the MIT to improve power line communications receives an award
    requirements in the communications associated with people s safety for example to be deployed or the capacities of applications requiring connections between devices to be improved without needing the deployment of new dedicated power lines or communications infrastructure There is a broad range of applications that could take advantage of the advances made They include home automation systems surveillance and intelligent home management systems etc smart city components systems embedded in transport reducing of wiring in vehicles aircraft and shipbuilding etc management of components in fields like healthcare energy or water and smart light and gas meters The award winning paper proposes making use of power lines used for powering devices so that devices can be connected up with each other Each machine would act as a node in the network and if one node fails to receive part of the information correctly it could be rapidly completed with information that would be provided by the other machines via cooperative mechanisms explained Josu Bilbao IK4 IKERLAN researcher and leader of the study What the authors are proposing for this is a system of communications based on an innovative technique based on Network Coding that would surpass the theoretical limits that can be reached by classical communications setups As he pointed out more and more applications are calling for robust communications networks Right now when one machine tries to exchange information with another and there is a problem in communication the first one has to resend all the information and this process has to be repeated as many times as necessary until the second machine receives it he added What we are seeking to do is to design new methods that will allow the robustness and efficiency of communications to be increased while cutting the cost of its deployment he concluded Given that the classical method is not as efficient and reliable as one would wish finding ways of improving the communication systems in problematic scenarios is posing a major challenge for the scientific community Making use of the electrical power lines already deployed is an option of growing interest said Bilbao What is more the method developed by the IK4 IKERLAN CEIT IK4 TECNUN and MIT researchers offers more security than the conventional type against possible attacks because the information is encrypted Right now this method for improving communications via power lines has been tested in low voltage electrical power networks However the researchers are exploring the possibility of applying it in other fields as well as the interest of various companies in using these communications mechanisms experimentally Communication via power lines The use of power lines as a communications network means that the huge deployment of the mains power network can be taken advantage of That is why it offers a very interesting solution wherever the deployment of a new network infrastructure as in old buildings poses complications or in environments in which the use of wireless systems is not feasible due to the long distances to be covered
