  • Optimal economic exploitation of hydrogen based grid-friendly zero energy buildings
    Etxeberria Otadui I Seddik Bacha P R This paper presents economically optimized energy and power management strategies for grid friendly hydrogen based Zero Energy Buildings ZEBs The proposed energy management strategy is an adaptative optimization based strategy that minimizes the operation cost of the facility taking into account RES generation prediction errors It is shown that with an Adaptative Optimized Five step Charge Controller AOFC2 the use of the different equipment is optimized and the overall operation cost is minimized considering the entire life of the facility The proposed energy management strategy is coordinated with power management strategies to offer advanced functionalities peak shaving reactive power control and back up service that provide added value to the facility The paper demonstrates by means of offline and real time simulations that an adequate energy and power management structure permits the optimal economic exploitation of an advanced ZEB that includes an energy storage system providing not only a zero energy annual balance but also interesting added value features to the grid and to the local consumers IK4 Ikerlan Organización y equipo Resultados Infraestructuras y equipamiento Desarrollo profesional IK4 Research Alliance Mondragón Corporación I D para empresas Desarrollo de productos y servicios Eficiencia

  • PEBB based medium voltage converter optimized design methodology
    point of view as electrical thermal and mechanical aspects must be integrated However the design decisions are often based on the knowhow and the experience of the designers and thus even if the proposed solutions are generally correct they are not always the optimal solutions In the last years in order to formalize the design decisions some design methodologies based on optimization algorithms have been proposed However most of them are focused on low voltage converters The main objective of this thesis is the proposal of an optimized design methodology to the design of MV converters For this purpose a design methodology that enables the evaluation different converter configurations providing some indicators to evaluate their performance in an autonomous way is presented Based on the developed design methodology a design tool is developed and applied to the design of a 3kV 8MVA grid connected converter including the algorithms simulation models and the mathematics behind the design methodology Then the designed converter is validated by means of multidisciplinary simulation models Finally the Power Electronic Building Block PEBB of the designed converter which consists of an IGCT based three level converter is developed and validated experimentally under nominal power ratings IK4 Ikerlan

  • Direct control strategy for PMSMs in railway traction applications
    new industrial trend for this type of application due to their god performance characteristics high power to weight ratio high torque at low sped direct drive capacity higher efficiency etc Following the innovative trend of leading industrial companies Alstom Skoda Electric Melco Mitsubishi etc that already use PMSM motors for railway rolling stock and motivated by the need of more technological knowledge about the control of this type of machines this thesis studies and analyses different advanced control strategies employed in PMSMs Being the main objective of this thesis the final proposal of an efficient and reliable control strategy that can fulfill the application requirements In this thesis the direct control strategy DSC is presented as a suitable new approach for the control of PMSM based railway traction applications Based on an already implemented robust induction machine direct torque controller firstly the required modifications for a PMSM have been defined and implemented in order to correctly adapt the controller to the peculiarities of PMSMs for example its own permanent flux The developed DSC control strategy has been thoroughly analysed and finally validated during this thesis not only by numerical simulations but also with experimental tests in a 10 kW laboratory test bench with a full scale PMSM traction prototype In addition a deep comparison study has also been realised with a traditional vector control strategy used in this type of application Several improvements have also been analysed in order to enhance the proposed control strategy For example the variation of machine internal parameters such as stator resistance stator inductances or permanent magnet flux due to external parameters variations as temperature or stator current have demonstrated that a correct parameterization is essential in order to achieve a robust control Therefore two permanent magnet flux online estimation algorithms a reduced order Extended

  • Energy management strategies based on dynamic programming for applications with energy storing capacity
    storage systems have some limitations such as safety and lifetime which are being addressed during the last years Nevertheless these are not the only challenges that need to be faced as their optimal rating and exploitation are also critical In fact when an energy storage system is introduced in any application two main issues must be solved On the one hand the energy storage system must be rated in order to satisfy the application requirements mainly the power and energy requirements On the other hand it must be optimally managed in order to make the most of the installed capacity Moreover these two aspects are strongly coupled In this thesis it is proposed to address this problem opening this coupling and solving the management problem first assuming a given energy rating Between the different possible energy management strategies this work is focused on a rule based control strategy which is optimized by implementing a Dynamic Programming based optimization technique For that purpose an implementation methodology is proposed for a systematic development and implementation of these optimized control strategies valid for deterministic and stochastic applications The cost function proposed for the optimization technique is based on the stock management theory In addition a new representation of stochastic applications is also proposed which relates the energy requirements of an application with their probabilities of occurrence The proposed methodology has been applied to a vertical transport application with energy storing capacity The proposed control strategy has been tested first in simulation and then experimentally validated in a full scale elevator with a supercapacitors based energy storage tank In addition a non optimized rule based control strategy has also been analyzed developed implemented and compared to the optimized control strategy These results have validated the proposed methodology and demonstrated that the optimization techniques based

  • Metodología de aplicación de la optimización para el aumento de la eficiencia energética en las redes de distribución de baja tensión
    cambio climático La aplicación de las herramientas de optimización en este sector puede contribuir a mejorar sus niveles de eficiencia y favorecer su desarrollo de una forma más sostenible En esta tesis se desarrolla una metodología para la aplicación de las herramientas de optimización en las redes de Baja Tensión BT con el objetivo de mejorar la EE de estas redes y por extensión la del sistema eléctrico en general Asimismo se valida su aplicación sobre tres escenarios tipo de la red de BT La aplicación de la metodología sobre el primero de los escenarios la red de distribución de BT permite constatar la potencialidad de la optimización para mejorar la EE de la red mediante la ubicación y dimensionamiento óptimos de la generación distribuida conectada en la misma En el segundo de los escenarios se analiza la gestión de la demanda en un ámbito doméstico En él se comprueban los beneficios de la optimización mediante la metodología propuesta para el usuario y para la propia red Por último la aplicación de la metodología sobre el tercer escenario permite constatar las posibilidades de mejora de la EE de la red a través de la gestión de la auto producción en

  • Multiphysical Characterization of Medium-Frequency Power Electronic Transformers
    the development of Power Electronic Converters with greater functionality higher reliability higher efficiency lower cost and more sophisticated control will be essential The main goal of future Power Electronic Converters will be to increase power density reduce cost and improve reliability This way volume weight and material reduction as well as reliability will gain the future market A great contribution of these goals will be made by new high power semiconductor devices which permit the extension of the frequency range of power converters and consequently the reduction of magnetic components A good example of one of these systems are medium frequency power conversion systems also known as Power Electronic Transformers which are able to convert electric power as convectional transformers but with increased features volume and weight reduction power transfer and quality control etc The present work introduces a complete characterization of a medium frequency power transformer suitable for efficient Power Electronic conversion systems The motivation of the present work stems out from the need to evaluate the constraints of conventional transformer characterization and design methodologies The proposed expressions are able to successfully address the problematic related to non sinusoidal waveforms typical of medium frequency power transformers Moreover a design
