    in the electronics that controls trains Basically their functions focus on improving the control safety comfort operation and maintenance of the trains In other words they provide the intelligence needed to manage the technological and functional complexity of the trains allowing them to operate as safely and efficiently as possible What are the most critical functions that depend on a train s embedded systems We regard as critical functions those relating to safety mainly those that have to do with protecting trains such as signalling brakes and door operation What is more there is another set of functions regarded as critical not so much in their relation to safety but in their role in the basic operation of the trains such as traction control What are the main challenges facing embedded systems in your sector The main challenges facing embedded systems are related to their standardization because right now there are many very different embedded systems and to the increase in the communication capabilities of the new functionalities set to emerge What is more the management of obsolescence is a key aspect to ensure the long term viability of embedded systems What does CAF SIGNALLING value most about IK4 IKERLAN s contribution IK4 IKERLAN is providing us with specific knowledge about the sector and the available technologies in addition to quality in the results of the collaboration that takes place and flexibility when implementing it Something we particularly value is the fact that our collaboration is within the framework of a long term approach Apart from embedded systems in what other areas is the CAF Group also working with the centre We have close collaboration in the fields of railway traction signalling ICTs and trainborne communication and energy storage which are fundamental vectors of innovation in railway systems Recently we

    the electrical and mechanical loads on the drivetrain the set of blades the multiplier and generator to be reduced which contributes towards increasing the production of energy or cutting component size In parallel it allows the wind farm to play an active role in stabilising the electrical power grid which in turn increases the profits for the wind farm owner What are the most critical functions of embedded systems in wind turbines The main function of a wind turbine the production of energy is controlled by embedded systems They play a very important role as they allow the energy produced by the wind turbines to be maximised within the limits set by the design They also perform other critical functions such as turning speed control correct wind alignment and control of the vibration level What challenges are embedded systems going to face in the future to meet the needs of the wind energy sector Energy cost remains one of the most important factors and to improve it in this respect the components are going to have to function increasingly closer to their physical limits The only way to do this is to use control systems in other words faster smarter sensors controllers and actuators equipped with more complex safety features In parallel there will be increased interaction between the wind turbines on the farms and the operation centres in terms of detecting problems in advance and optimising production across the farm Alstom collaborates closely with IK4 IKERLAN What would you highlight with respect to what the centre is contributing to your company in this area We deeply appreciate the knowledge that IK4 IKERLAN has about the new technologies as well as about the other sectors thanks to which we are offered solutions that are more suited to our products Finally

  • Wireless communications, new opportunities for industry
    offered by wireless networks in this respect are numerous But to replace the wire and be useful in sectors such as industry or transport they need to be dependable robust and secure even in hostile environments It is in fact in environments such as industry or means of locomotion that have characteristics that make them tremendously hostile for networks of this type distances materials vibrations or interference are a real challenge Embedded systems offering high dependability and security are a key tool when it comes to successfully resolving these problems they will drive forward the popularising of wireless solutions and the opportunities arising out of them Fresh opportunities Industrial automation systems consisting of a sensor a control device and an actuator have traditionally been deployed by means of architectures connected by wire Thanks to the new technologies it is possible to set up wireless networks that allow elements to be fitted with sensors such as train wheels or the head of a machine for example this is something that has been impossible to do until now The possibility of reaching hitherto inaccessible spots and thus obtain new data and capabilities is driving forwards servitization this is a process that is turning out to be a true revolution in industrial activity thanks to which companies apart from products are offering more and more services related to them Wireless communication networks allow machines to be handled remotely and more and better data to be obtained on the way the devices to which they have been fitted are functioning this allows the deployment of a whole range of services such as maintenance updates repairs remote management charge per use etc to be made It is this enhanced intelligence of devices that is in fact underpinning the connection between machines known as the internet of things or what boils down to the same thing a network of objects connected to each other via the Internet and capable of interacting This trend is fast becoming widespread in everyday objects devices and machines in the home and in the professional sphere Personalisation As has been made clear industry and the means of locomotion are hostile environments for wireless communications for various reasons Each scenario has its own circumstances and these are rarely repeated So there are no technological solutions that can be used for everything and which at the same time offer acceptable levels of dependability and safety In order to maximise the availability of the link it is necessary to design robust communication systems adapted to the specific circumstances of each space To do this technologies such as real time time critical security network coding ones cognitive radio and the design of digital physical levels need to be developed this will enable secure high availability wireless systems safety critical with adequate levels of security focussing on privacy and the inviolability of communications to be developed IK4 IKERLAN s capabilities At IK4 IKERLAN we have been developing technologies of this type for companies and working on

  • Embedded systems, a means for speeding up the competitiveness of companies
    the line of research in this field at IK4 IKERLAN A commitment by IK4 IKERLAN Aware that embedded systems were destined to be a breakthrough technology IK4 IKERLAN committed itself to exploring them ever since the centre was set up more than 40 years ago Since then it has been acquiring considerable experience thanks to which it has become a national and European benchmark owing to its trajectory the excellence of its researchers its critical mass its international network of collaborators and in particular owing to its work with companies that are leaders in their respective markets Today over 100 people make up the group of researchers who are developing in collaboration with companies innovative solutions involving embedded systems These solutions address the whole value chain They start with connected micro sensorics that can provide companies with new data on customer behaviour in any hostile industrial environment the so called Internet of Things They include dependable secure hard soft embedded platforms and robust wireless communications offering this new industrial network intelligence and communication and mass data mining techniques big data and associated technologies cloud computing that allow the most to be made of the new embedded technologies thanks to the setting up of new services This technological vertical integration makes it possible to come up with comprehensive solutions for the Advanced Manufacturing Transport Elevation and Energy sectors among others IK4 IKERLAN has been collaborating with companies such as CAF Orona Alstom Fagor Automation Ulma Ingeteam Ikusi Laulagun and others in an ongoing way for more than 10 years developing new generations of products and services through embedded systems The economic impact of this activity on companies over the last 5 years has amounted to 15 M and the investment made by IK4 Ikerlan in this field during this period has come to more than 5 M Developments of partial or complete embedded solutions of a collaborative or turnkey nature plus the pre approval regulations and the functional safety certification are taking place at IK4 IKERLAN there are reengineering projects and improvement of equipment and products projects to increase productivity and the introduction of life cycles among other things We are specialists in the development of embedded systems and in each of their technological disciplines hardware VHDL hardware description language and software We develop secure safe dependable robust maintainable embedded systems that offer solutions for real time communications fieldbuses wireless communications in hostile environments and M2M or machine to machine communications says Pérez The centre not only transfers technology to companies it also carries out important research work enabling it to remain at the forefront of the technology in this field An example of this is IK4 IKERLAN s participation in European projects such as the FP7 Multipartes one which it is leading and in which the necessary technology is being developed to incorporate a whole host of embedded control systems with various degrees of criticality into a single multicore platform or in projects funded by the Government of the Basque

    a hybrid bus URBAN ART Single phase lift with integrated storage GRUPO ORONA Assessment and diagnosis of residential electric lifts focused on predictive maintenance GRUPO ORONA More of this type of project Development of a lithium ion storage system prototype for railway applications Share Lithium ion electro mechanical and thermal system design CUSTOMER GRUPO CAF SECTOR Transport We have developed a prototype of an energy storage system for railway applications using lithium ion technology The main activity of the project was centred on the electro mechanical design of a module and a lithium ion branch line as well as an active cooling system required for operations within the entire railway temperature range 30 C to 45 C This solution is compatible in terms of the size of existing storage solutions implemented for tramway applications based on supercapacitor technologies but with an energy density that is 15 times greater comparing the total energy of both housings and therefore allowing existing trams to achieve much greater autonomy Challenges and results Prototype storage system based on lithium ion technology modified for railway applications UNE EN 61373 compatible in terms of the size of existing storage systems and therefore interchangeable with these improving the

    storage system prototype for railway applications GRUPO CAF ERTMS ETCS Signalling and train control system GRUPO CAF More of this type of project Single phase lift with integrated storage Share Energy efficiency for lifts CUSTOMER GRUPO ORONA SECTOR Transport PROGRAMME State administration INNPACTO Specifically focused on the retrofitting of buildings this project aims to make a lift operate on a low power single phase 230 V 500 W connection making it possible for it to be installed in older buildings without a high voltage power supply To achieve this it is necessary to integrate a storage system battery to reduce network power consumption and that can allow for energy recovery during braking and enable off grid operation During the year we have worked mostly on the topology of the lift and the most suitable batteries have been selected and dimensioned A technological platform has also been developed for a lift that can carry six people This concept has been validated and tower verification tests have been conducted Challenges and results Single phase lift topology with integrated storage allowing a reduction on the power grid by 80 and also allows for energy recovery during braking and off grid operation The concept
