    tourist infromation offices are the place to go for maps leaflets and advice on activities Before beginning your tour we reccommend a visit to the national park Visitors Centre at Juego de Bolas some 15 minutes from Vallehermoso There is an interesting garden with endemic plants and there are ethnographic exhibits audio visual displays maps and charts providing visitors with a comprehensive overview of the island s heritage Although obviously once on the island and armed with sufficient information the way in which a stay is enjoyed will depend on the preferences and circumstances of each visitor length of stay travelling alone or with family etc we would like to make a few further suggestions Vallehermoso is overall tranquility landscape nature and history The Garajonay National Park and other protected natural spaces can all be visited in many ways but it is highly reccommended that you walk at least some of the well sufaced and signposted footpaths It is worth visiting the very varied districts and villages of Vallehermoso where the stone houses terraces and palm groves that bear testimony to the area s farming and agricultural legacy can still be seen The viewing points and recreation areas are public places well sited and generally equipped with interpretive panels and tables giving details of the protected zone or natural area visited The coast of Vallehermoso largely consists of steep cliffs but also shelters a number of small clean beaches with waves washing the north facing coastline Lovers of tranquility and great nature will enjoy the exclusive nature of these hidden beaches Due to a unique variety of interesting locations Vallehermoso s restaurants provide the oportunity to enjoy traditional cuisine inside the Garajonay National Park in nearby villages on the coast at Alojera or in the old town itself In the

    emission conduits and which are very conspicuous in the landscape On La Gomera they cover a large area from the Barranco de Hermigua ravine as far as the Punta de Béjira point The Vallehermoso basin is one of the largest and best examples in the Canaries However the oldest materials appear between Los Órganos and the Béjira coast where submarine lavas can be observed which originated before the island had emerged A period of inactivity enabled part of this original complex to be remodelled by erosion but further emissions produced restructuring of the land scape From these emissions in Vallehermoso the Roque Cano crag remains as an impressive witness which has managed to resist the powerful erosive processes taking place in the Vallehermoso basin Later two cycles of basaltic emissions followed separa ted by a further erosive period The final phase occurred 4 5 million years ago when pointed crags roques and fortress like rock formations fortalezas were created These features are emission conduits which have sur vived dismantling by erosion Argodey the Fortaleza de Chipude a magical site for the Gomerans was once an enormous volcano whose lava flows accumulated in its crater For the last 2 8 million years La Gomera has not felt any rumbling in its innards Stone has always been present in the life of Valleher moso s inhabitants right from the beginning not only in their efforts to dominate the steep terrain by constructing terraces stone upon stone but also employing it as part of a closer rela tionship chiniques or hearth stones basalt for buil ding the walls of their houses mill stones for grinding corn to produce gofio coarse toasted meal places of worship for the aborigines in the form of roques which rise out of the landscape drinking troughs for livestock

    of the island is a savin the tree acquires a rounded shape a few metres in height 2 3 metres or else is stunted by the effects of wind but reaches in favourable conditions a height of 8 metres The Canarian savin is found on the central and western islands of the Archipelago As is the case with almost all thermophilous woodlands a term used to designate various types of woodland such as those in which palm trees or wild olive trees predo mi nate the sabina res were on the point of disappearing after the colo nisation of the islands due to occupation of their habitat by human settlements and the develop ment of agriculture and live stock farming The wood of the tree valued since aborigine times has been used over the years for roofing in joinery or as firewood he attractiveness of the savin woodlands of Vallehermoso and Tamargada is that they enable changes in the physiognomy of the trees themselves and also in the accompanying vegetation to be observed in accordance with the altitude as they extend from areas near the sea up to the tree heather myrtle and laurel woodlands Near the coast the savin is mixed with alcanutilla Euphorbia aphylla a member of the spurge genus as altitude increases other species belonging in this type of woodland are found such as sándalo Convolvulus floridus a member of the bindweed genus espino Rhamnus crenulata a species of buckthorn or acebuche the wild olive tree Olea cerasiformis On hillsides exposed to the sun sparse woodlands develop while in shadier higher areas the savin mixes in with patches of tree heather and myrtle It s unusual to walk through these woodlands and not hear the cry of a buzzard Buteo buteo or the cawing of crows Corvus
