  • Ezra and the iPhone | Making of a Family
though his version of Mama Gefilte s cry of Oy Vey is insanely adorable OH DAAAAAAYYYY While Sandy s phone is packed with interactive kid s games for him I m a bit disorganized about downloading that stuff and only have a few so he spends a lot of time on my phone just exploring and crank calling Claire and my mom He also takes a lot of photos They all look like this and he has taken over 200 of them The other day I looked over his shoulder to see what had him enraptured and found him looking at this It took me a while to track down how my son had found a treasure trove of 1930s beefcake photos but research revealed that he had navigated through three or four layers in my IMDB app before finding the monkey he was searching for Though I joke about using the phone as a way to keep him occupied so I can do other stuff it s actually an amazing series of skills he s already built up in order to be able to do all these things on this tiny little machine Skills I barely have now that

  • Blizzard baby prevention | Making of a Family
actually want to be the blizzard baby mom but from Tuesday to Friday our streets remained unplowed our car trapped in a giant snow drift in an inaccessible alley Should Rummicub have decided to make an early entry I m not actually due until the 14th we really would have ended up in the newspaper So I spent Snowpocalypse 2011 doing everything I could to avoid going into labor and it was lovely I made a nest for Ezra and me on the futon in his room and we spent hours laying down together reading stories I spent Ezra s naps resting on the couch reading the New Yorker and evenings watching Downton Abbey on Tivo Sandy and Ezra took a few trips out in the snow and they enticed me out there for a quick jaunt out to Rockwell to get dinner on Wednesday but mostly I stayed lazily on my side There were some contraction y stretches that made me anxious but I didn t go into labor and Rummicub remains snuggled inside Now with our car freed our streets plowed and the weekly shift of my least favorite midwife past I am ready It s time for

  • What's in mama's belly? | Making of a Family
but in recent days he s become obsessed with my belly He demands to see the baby pulling my shirt up and my maternity pants down He pats then hits then kisses then hugs my belly I tell him that there s a baby hidden inside but that she ll be coming out soon to meet him He has no idea what I m talking about but I like to pretend that he does He also loves reading our favorite big brother book over and over again On the first page it says Someone new is at our house do you know who it is and without fail when I ask him who it is as I turn the page he yells baby with great excitement He also points at babies in strollers on the street and loves peeking at the new babies he s met recently I know that our real baby who will cry and take mama s attention will be much less compelling for him than these other babies who can be closed back into a book or wheeled back to their own houses but I ll take all the encouragement I can get 5 comments 5

  • Home stretch | Making of a Family
enough I find that the intense bladder pain that I m feeling now that she s really put her whole head right down on top of it is somehow less frustrating than the low level ache that I ve had for weeks It s like the intensity is a reminder that this is almost over She is like Ezra was a mover and a pusher and I can pretty much always feel her back and butt forced out against me Her smaller jabbier limbs will dart out a few times a day poking me in the side before swimming back into the ether of my abdomen She s so close to the surface that she will notice if I get too close to a table at the coffeeshop or rest my laptop on her and will push out to meet the resistance leading to some hilariously visibly lumpy belly configurations Like last time I can spend hours of my day with one hand resting on her feeling the amazing sensation of her moving around I know it will be gone soon and I m trying hopelessly to capture the feeling for later Like last time too I am reading and re reading Penny Simkin in the bathroom where I spend a good percentage of every day there is nothing so boring and oppressive as having to pee every half hour trying to maintain the sense that I will recognize labor when it begins and that I will be able to adapt to it as it happens Perhaps Rummicub s labor will be a bit longer than Ezra s precipitate arrival three hours after I went from no contractions to water breaking and intense contractions two minutes apart in under thirty minutes Perhaps this time there will be a bit of

  • Dear Ezra: Month Nineteen | Making of a Family
Now you pick up gestures after seeing one or two times You throw up your hands in a flex motion when we you hear strong in a book You tickle yourself like the storybook bees do and butterflies make you flutter your hands in a way that we both swear we can t remember doing ourselves The bigger joy is seeing you mimic the everyday behaviors we don t even think about taking our keys and trying to put them in the lock to open the door Wetting a washcloth in the sink and patting it to your face Blowing your nose in a tissue and saying achoo And of course your favorite talking on the phone My god the phones you are obsessed with them You ll gladly talk on anything in vaguely a phone shape but you save your true love for my iPhone dropping whatever you re doing when you see it and calling after it with a plaintive Hello Hello I knew I was entering dangerous territory when I taught you taught you how to swipe it open But I also knew I wouldn t be able to resist your clamoring forever so better to give in early and teach you how to use it properly And actually it s worked For a while all you could do was hit the home button Now you swipe your way toward the screen that holds all the kids apps and you actually play with them And bless you they keep you entertained for dozens of minutes at at time Your favorites are the charming Peekaboo Barn and the rather boring but educational I Hear Ewe You even have learned how to flip off the vibrate switch so you can hear the animal sounds I do realize this could
