  • A family of friends | Making of a Family
of how lucky we are to have such amazing friends And more than that a reminder of how lovely it is as a parent to have some friends who aren t whether they are planning to have kids down the road or not I treasure my non parent friends for their seemingly boundless supply of energy to spare for Ezra and their remarkable flexibility as we ve tailored our and by extension their social calendar to fit the demands of our kid Ezra for his part lapped up the attention from his five doting aunties and uncles and was at his very cutest for most of the weekend He only stole everyone s iPhones a few times and I only caught him actually putting events on Stacey s calendar once Luke and Stacey even agreed to share a room so that Ezra could have his own room and it meant that he slept through the night both nights which is unheard of for him on a trip My favorite moment of the whole trip was when Stacey and Jenni told me to go upstairs and take a nap and instead I stayed up listening to them delight my child with

  • Vocabulary | Making of a Family
in the inflection and tone like an Asian language Cereal is yull bird is beeyoo He s also got a mantra that we don t totally understand chanting oh gee over and over again Perhaps he is an Original Gangsta His vocabulary of ideas and sounds is expanding rapidly at the same time He can now do a rather intimidating chomping motion to mimic a crocodile and if I ask him what a bee does he tickles himself under the armpits and buzzes the way I do when we get to the bumblebee page in one of his books He refers to his favorite book Hop on Pop as bop bop On Monday I taught him where his cheeks are but for some reason when I say Ezra where are your cheeks he kisses me on my cheek It melts me with the cute What s amazing of course is not that my 18 month old can say apple or buzz like a bee It s more the intense speed with which new words come into his vocabulary One day he cannot say apple the next day he can I love wondering what words and concepts and tricks will come

  • Pandemic | Making of a Family
board games party games and puzzles For instance there s a game called Pandemic which is a cooperative game where all the players work as epidemiologists attempting to head off outbreaks of contagious diseases all over the world Sometimes you can handily contain the infections and find the cures in time sometimes the diseases multiply so fast you can barely formulate a strategy for dealing with them and the team goes down to ignominious defeat This year tragically the game came to life in a variation called Pandemic Everyone Gets Norovirus And we lost We all lost When I started to feel nauseous on Sunday night I wasn t too concerned I m eight months pregnant and everything in there is weird But then there was that explosive vomiting at midnight And then in the morning the assorted tweets and email mentions from friends of stomach flu and food poisoning It quickly dawned on us that something terrible had come into our home and wreaked havoc Now that I m back on my feet I spent yesterday afternoon bleaching my kitchen and cleaning off all the doorknobs with antibacterial wipes Nevertheless it ll be a little while before I fully

at a photo of a lion a drawing sometimes extremely abstract of a lion or a lion at the zoo and know that they are all lions And on top of that they are able to associate the word roar with the lion and know that the actual sound a lion makes is a roar even though it doesn t much sound like the word the way it is commonly

  • This time around | Making of a Family
most of every day with one hand on my belly excited every time a round lump of baby rises to the surface which is increasingly frequent I still don t know what I m feeling in there butt head feet knees but I know it s the coolest I giggle every time Ezra leans back against me while we re reading books and I feel a little jut of Rummicub poke out towards him He doesn t seem to notice but I think it s hilarious But it s also a little harder When I considered the things that would be tough about having kids close together I never thought that the very first issue would be that Ezra simply isn t quite old enough to reliably walk up the stairs or down them or down the block on his own or even holding my hand He wants to be carried A lot And he weighs 30 pounds And so does all this pregnancy weight And so do the groceries The upshot of that is that my back has been killing me I had sacroiliac joint pain with Ezra too but this time it started earlier and has been much more intense I finally went to physical therapy after Sandy got us health insurance and the PT looked sternly at me holding Ezra on my left hip and said I d make a bet with you about your hips being out of alignment but it wouldn t be fair to take your money because I m absolutely right about this And she was My right hip was just hanging out a full inch higher than the left before she wrenched it all back into place I think the PT is going to help but I still wake up with achy

  • Dear Ezra: Month Eighteen | Making of a Family
visit to your dresser to find a pair of socks You chase the cats through the house yelling meow at them On our recent trip to Florida you followed a pack of seagulls down the beach pointing and saying bird bird bird to them the way we do when we read your books You definitely wowed em in Florida charming your grandfather and uncles with your kisses and hugs and basketball prowess We visited the pool every day and you loved it becoming so brave by the end of the trip that you would stand on the edge and just leap into our arms giggling and splashing as we caught you You even liked hanging on the edge of the pool all by yourself floating your chubby legs in the water and getting ready to let go and swim This month you have continued to show yourself to be a serious and self sufficient kid A few weeks ago we had our first visit to the Kohl Children s Museum It was crowded and overwhelming but you took it in with aplomb I put you down and watched for two hours as you simply walked from place to place experimenting watching touching pressing buttons and then moving on For two hours you didn t ask for a snack or to be picked up You never cried or even whined You just concentrated and wandered occasionally pointing at something you thought was awesome and exlaiming whoooooooa It wasn t a fluke either We went back today and you were exactly the same way You were even pretty laid back a few days ago when your curls finally grew back past our ability to keep them out of your eyes and mouth and your dad decided to give you a haircut We set you up in your high chair put on some Sesame Street videos and gave you a graham cracker Your first haircut occasioned intense crying This one was more like a slight inconvenience I am delighted to report that even cut short your mop still curls up Your easygoing attitude makes you great with babysitters and you passed the ultimate babysitter test a few weeks ago spending your very first overnight away from us with your Nana and Papa where you napped ate and slept through the night like a champ You even let Nana brush your teeth While you three were partying your dada and I were busy going swimming reading for hours at a stretch and eating fancy meals at a babymoon downtown We loved the chance to get a little time away but found ourselves doing Ezra impressions all the time waving and blowing kisses and telling each other Bye in Ezra voices each time we left the room You continue to love books and this month you have increased your demands that we read you certain books over and over and over again while you absorb the images and sounds You love the rhymes and crazy

  • Nuclear option | Making of a Family
to make something that put me in orbit of the site Nothing tangible came of that conversation for almost three years Then in August Adrian the man in charge emailed me and asked if I wanted to apply for the job Wilson was leaving I actually said something along the lines of probably not but let s talk We talked talked some more and agreed on a three month two day a week contract to see if we worked out for each other Meanwhile I did some handwringing Shutting down Methodtree was not an easy decision How do I just close the door on something I ve built up for four years I thought about it for months Finally I figured it out this kind of job is exactly what I had be building towards I just didn t realize it at the time Two months into our contract I told Adrian I m in Freelance life it has been very very good to me I ve been extremely fortunate to be able to make a life doing it and to support my family too It started out on a whim back in our childless days when I felt more freedom to take that kind of gamble It has been greatly successful and even after Ezra was born and after we got re pregnant enough work was coming in to keep us comfortable But when you work for yourself there s always that low background hum of instability and there was great appeal with Rummicub s imminent arrival to turn off that hum and turn on the faucet of a steady paycheck And that s to say nothing about the insurance Sarah has written about it before It s awful It s stressful I can honestly say the decision to
