  • Not yet | Making of a Family
But he s not a walker The other day his babysitter announced that he had taken five steps I absolutely swear that it is not only out of every parent s anxiety that the kid s going to hit milestones when they re away that I say this no way Didn t happen Not possible The truth is he has taken a few steps here and there mostly just single steps that are more for balance than for forward movement Sandy saw him take two small steps the other day before sitting down We ve tried holding out things high up in front of him that he wants but he s too smart for that trick realizing that it would be way faster to drop to his knees crawl over to us and pull back up to standing Sometimes I think he s rolling his eyes at us and our transparent parenting ruses It will be soon though He is definitely showing more interest in long distance furniture cruising moving from chair to chair to table to cabinet and more interest in walking while we hold his hands He walks impressive distances pushing things especially the shopping cart toy he

she felt like a whale who swallowed an army of angry blowfish We all did My emails to Sandy had a constant refrain your stupid giant baby has the stupid hiccups again But it was a sweet special time too when some of my most important friendships were cemented as we waddled into Julius Meinl and gorged on crazy pastries and compared symptoms and signs of impending labor Happy first

  • Dear Ezra: Month Eleven | Making of a Family
as if you re the inspector out on a call When it s not that it s the cupboards with the tupperware or the bathroom drawers or under the office desk banging on the cable modem to see what all those lights are for We had to move the cat food a couple months back and I m pretty sure in a couple months we re going to have to move the cats if they don t learn to get out of your way on their own Meanwhile I can t tell you how relieved I am to see you take to water I guess that early immersion therapy we put you through last summer at the beach has already paid off In addition to lack of fear we see at public fountains you also are right at home in the bath which at our house is Daddy s turf From day one you ve never been one to be bothered by water even when its sudden appearance from above is unexpected and immersive You spend your time gnawing on the toys that float by you or gigging when I spray you in the chest with a stream of water Sometimes I feel you re being too docile and try to get the raucousness going by starting a splashing war You never take the bait Mom and I have been thankful that lately you ve settled into a more normal adult friendly sleep routine though you haven t quite lined up your wake up time with ours Lately this has resulted in a new morning routine for the two of us After Mom gets up with you she brings you into the bedroom and throws you on top of me like you re my alarm clock We cuddle and wrestle

  • Kids Clothes Week Challenge, Days 5-7: Back to Basics | Making of a Family
The weekend in general proved a little trickier for finding sewing time and I definitely sensed myself losing focus and reverting back to my old habit of second guessing ideas and changing my mind mid project For instance Days 6 and 7 produced these crazy ruffly flower pants which have great potential to be adorable but aren t quite right yet Close though I desperately wanted to squeeze every sewing minute out of this week so I forged on ahead even as the carnage of thread snippings and fabric scraps gathered on every available surface Hopefully when I m not on such a determined mission I can go slow enough to keep things a little neater I also definitely need to reorganize that space to make it easier to keep clean But I definitely noticed that when I let myself get into that place of indecision and started throwing ideas at the clothes like crazy I ended up with much more mess and was less happy with the results So that s important to watch out for too On the other hand I loved the zone I got into when I was making those two pairs of pants for Ezra

  • Kids Clothes Week Challenge, Day 4: PLAID Pants! | Making of a Family
the world in flowered pants Struck bored by the thought of another pair of khakis even with the prospect of adding cool cuffs or pockets I rummaged around for another option and found it in our growing bag of donation garage sale items This is one of Sandy s shirts and now that I know I can easily make a pair of 12 month size pants out of a man

  • Kids Clothes Week Challenge, Day 2: Bibs, large and small | Making of a Family
gifts And it is Easy quick great for gifts On the other hand last night s bibs demonstrate yet another of my personal craft issues I m sometimes careless Take for instance the first bib I churned out last night over the course of yet another 3 hour marathon Cute right But look at it overlaid with the bib it should have been modeled on See how it s way way bigger In adding seam allowances and attaching multiple parts together I let it grow and grow and never rechecked the template I d made against the original Do five year olds wear bibs Because I ve got one available So back to the drawing board I went and made a new template of more reasonable size This time I was determined to make a pocket and to make it reversible It totally worked It is adorable But the reason that one side of the pocket is yellow is because I was careless about making the best use of my fabric when cutting and ended up without a big enough piece of the white alphabet fabric to make a pocket out of I almost didn t have enough blue either

  • Kids Clothes Week Challenge, Day 1: Indecision | Making of a Family
and a big mess to clean up Last night I sat down to make these adorable kneepad pants This tutorial is incredibly clear and easy to follow I had a big swath of tan cotton all picked out for the pants and figured that with all that fabric stuffed in my closet the kneepads would just fall into place But then instead of following her advice about printing an oval and using it as a template or her other advice about the cozy padded quality of jersey kneepads I experimented with rectangular kneepads and crazy uneven hand drawn ovals in all sorts of quilting cottons with polka dots and owls Nothing looked right And yes I did cut out a few trial pairs before I gave up This is the point in the project where I usually put it away for a year or two only to find it later and give up on it all over again Instead I took a deep breath and reminded myself that I had chosen to follow this tutorial instead of one of the other excellent make your own baby pants tutorials out there because I thought those pants looked cool And here right
