high deductible variety He has also been incredibly lucky that with the exception of a broken wrist a few years ago he hasn t needed a whole lot of health care In contrast I would never ever have voluntarily given up my group health coverage even though I was unhappy with my job and wanted to do more freelance work But then my part time job revoked my health coverage in January of 2009 which sent me packing to full time freelance work and I was stuck with wildly expensive COBRA because Sandy s individual policy didn t cover me and I had a pre existing condition named Perquackey Now after months of wrangling with a private insurer whose rates doubled in the months it took them to finally accept my application I m finally going to go off COBRA one way or another It expires at the end of June so even if I cling to it for a few more months I have to find something new in July Turns out no matter what I choose my premium won t go down very much and my coverage will get much much worse Perhaps this new legislation won t

  • Dear Ezra: Month Nine | Making of a Family
who s fed up with being jerks all day a little smile from you can instantly put her in a good mood For a passenger who s been waiting in line or on the tarmac for hours seeing you happy and giggling can calm their nerves Best of all for your parents every memory made is even more meaningful thanks to your presence in it After the three flights that took us to and from Puerto Rico sand sun and West Palm Beach grandpa uncles you got a couple weeks or so at home and then you were off again to SXSW in Austin geeks BBQ You should know that there s no pressure to follow me into a nerdy line of work Your future is open and we will love you no matter what you choose as long as it s not a PC But I m not above putting the pressure on early and my hope is that a few days partying with the smart folks at SXSW year after year will subconsciously tilt the scale in that direction I m hoping to step it up next year and get you featured on a panel Tentative title My Baby Is Cuter Than Your Website Meanwhile your bag of tricks continues to grow Or rather the bag stays the same size but the tricks inside change A month ago it was your favorite thing to stand up straight while I held you by your calves Now not so much You re over it Now you love nothing more than to pull yourself up every vertical surface whether it s a chair the table the wall or your recumbent daddy Your favorite activity is to play Dishwasher Inspector The moment that door flips down you drop whatever you re doing

is that yours I point at my stroller He s sleeping I say He s a good baby Very quiet Help me please I m paraphrasing 10 00 am This flight is delayed which the gate agent cheerfully informs me is working against me You get standby seats when people miss connections or get caught in traffic As the flight is delayed longer and longer more harried looking people keep running up saying thank god I made my connection I start crying a little 10 30 am Austin flight leaves I am not on it Ezra s nap is over and our flight is still hours away Also our flight has no gate assigned I ask a random gate agent what that means and she starts with the stock It s nothing They re just shuffling the gates watch the board it ll be assigned soon But adds You know it s weird the computer says you re leaving on time at 1 15 but shows that the plane you ll be leaving on won t even be arriving until 3 30 That s so strange I start crying again Oh I m sure it will be fine she says 11 30 am For some reason I am eating Manchu Wok for lunch It is a terrible mistake on so many levels Ezra is picking grains of rice off the airport rug and eating them 12 30 pm Our flight finally has a gate 1 15 pm There is no airplane at this gate We are delayed to 1 40 1 30 pm There is no airplane at this gate 1 40 pm There is an airplane here but no crew Gate agent informs us that our crew is on some other airplane and we just have to wait for them to walk over here This sounds very sketchy 2 00 pm This airplane We are on it It is moving 5 30 pm Very nice lady at Alamo is doing all my paperwork and I casually since I had called ahead to ask about it so I wasn t at all worried say so you have the right kind of car seat right A toddler car seat that can be installed rear facing She looks at me No I don t think we do she says Time stops I think I sort of blacked out for a moment and I may have let out some kind of scream Luckily this intense and total loss of control only lasts for a few seconds and then it turns into just normal crying I m so sorry I tell her It s just been a really long day 5 45 pm The nice lady at Alamo has coaxed me into a seat and made some phone calls Honey I m going to send you up there and you can go through every car seat we ve got We ll find something I promise I m a mom It s going to be

crispy delight at Rancho Original and then got right back in the car and drove an hour back It was worth it Other big winners in Puerto Rico included the cafe con leche at Kasalta the ceviche at Pa l Cielo and the Brazo Gitano guava jelly roll cake Lourdes s boyfriend gave us from his trip to Mayagüez Ezra also enjoyed the food in Puerto Rico At eight months his food horizons are starting to broaden and I ve been wanting him to try more flavors garlic cinnamon just as he is starting to demand food with interesting textures banana and avocado chunks Cheerios I brought a starter pack of food from home but decided ahead of time to try within reason to feed him parts of our meals rather than obsessing about making sure we had enough official Baby Food I brought a few bibs bowls and spoons a big ziploc bag full of cheerios another full of quick oats and a lunch bag with a few ounces of frozen breastmilk and a few cubes of frozen baby food TSA regulations allow you to bring that stuff in addition to your baggie full of shampoos by the way even if you don t have a ticket for your babe It was pretty much right on and I could have brought even less since the milk kept for a few days but by the time we got to Florida more on that tomorrow it was starting to sour Every morning in Puerto Rico I made him some breastmilk oatmeal and stirred in a little spoonful of one of the veggie purees I d made For the rest of the day he had cheerios and little mashed up pieces of what we were eating At one restaurant the waitress made

  • Little Traveler | Making of a Family
nap schedule I decided on the first day that I would relax and give him a chance to show us whether he d be ok if he had to nap in the car or stroller before decreeing that we had to be in the hotel room for most of the day And he was fine He napped in the car in the stroller at the beach in the Ergo Certainly not as restful as regular crib naps but it was only for a few days Before the trip he had been working towards a good night sleep schedule Did it survive the trip Nope But I talked it through with myself before the trip after having been really disappointed when he woke up a lot on a weekend trip to Galena a few weeks ago I decided just to try not to be disappointed To expect him to wake up more than usual To nurse on demand I was really tired of it and just plain tired by the end of the trip but at least I didn t spend the trip feeling cheated that he wasn t sleeping through the night Baby Monitor We don t use a baby monitor at home I wake up so easily when he cries even down the hall through a closed door that if we used a monitor I would never sleep at all But we brought it on the trip to use in the evenings and it was brilliant I booked us into a pretty small neighborhood hotel with a small courtyard and then spent a few weeks feeling terrible that I hadn t found us a place with a balcony worrying that Sandy and I would get trapped in the room after bedtime and feel really claustrophobic for the whole trip
