  • Dear Ezra: Month Five | Making of a Family
watching you do this every time we lay you down we figured maybe you wanted to sit up So we sat you up stepped back and much to our shock and wonder you stayed that way You looked back at us as if to say See guys I know what I m doing At which point you flopped right back down or at least flopped into our arms because it turns out you don t really know what you re doing We continue to give you sitting up practice and I hear it s quite an achievement for a baby your age Don t rest on your laurels yet boy there are a few more steps to go before you get your MacArthur grant Your other big trick is finally becoming comfortable sleeping on your belly We never set you up that way you re always left on your back but in your perpetual nighttime wrangling you always flip over It s only in the last few days when you ve realized you re okay with that We ll come in in the mornings alerted not by cries but by harmless babbling to find you on your belly smiling You ll then lift yourself into a Cobra yoga move and grin in a way that says I m ready for the day Dad If it s early enough which it usually is you and I will go hang in the living room playing on our bellies listening to music while Mom catches up on her sleep I was at a party this month strange in any season and all the more so now that I m a dad and after a few gimlets I got to rambling I steered the conversation to you probably in a manner more obvious than

  • Boy meets sausage | Making of a Family
never worked out Until Friday when we made a commitment to go for my birthday lunch We squeezed him back into that onesie ostensibly made for 3 to 6 month olds but who are we kidding waited 45 minutes in line then woke him up to get a photo with local hero Doug Sohn Trust me that s a look of wonderment not fear Who could be afraid of Doug

  • Why I'm looking up Spanish verbs instead of working | Making of a Family
could get everything done That didn t really work out I think some people have the laser like focus needed to work this way He s down for a nap Drop everything and do 1 5 hours of grantwriting I sadly do not He s down for a nap Boy I could use a little rest and a snack and these dishes are really piling up and some quiet time to read sounds great and I ve got some emails to return Plus that work Oh wait He s awake again So last week I dropped Ezra off for the very first time with a babysitter who was neither a friend nor a relative My friend Claire s nanny Herminia is watching Veronica and Ezra together on Thursday mornings for a few weeks and so far it s going great though my desire to speak coherently in Spanish to Herminia far outstrips my abilities Here s me this morning trying to say He wanted to take a nap at 8 30 but we had to leave to come here so he woke back up Me He He He trying desperately to come up with the past tense of want I

  • Parents of the year | Making of a Family
to sit up More accurately he s been figuring out how to not fall down if propped up in a sitting position He s finding it challenging though fulfilling when it works out It s also been a learning experience for his parents who have the habit of concentrating more on capturing the event on video rather than watching out for to the trick s inevitable conclusion Exhibits A B

  • A vague memory of exhaustion | Making of a Family
he was up for an hour every time I battled through it by watching a ton of TV Now he s up for much less time and he s also way more distractible so there s no way I m going to haul him into the living room for an adventure involving sound and light We nurse quietly in his room in the rocker or on the futon and then I shuttle him back into the crib and hope he stays asleep for at least a few hours before the next wakeup call If it were just one or two times each night I really would be fine But there have been nights in recent memory that have involved four even five wakeups Some nights I m sanguine about it but some nights I feel a sense of dread every time I wake up to his insistent cries Maybe he s teething maybe it s a growth spurt maybe it s his four month sleep regression maybe he just wakes up because he knows I ll come cuddle with him and bring those delicious boobies with me I keep asking him to just tell me what the problem is He just yells aaaaaaaaahhhhhh in his hilarious new hoarse lion roar voice and starts sucking on my chin again There are no simple solutions Or actually there are a million simple solutions all of which contradict each other I ve been trying to figure out if it s time for us to try letting him cry it out but it s complicated He goes down for the night pretty easily most nights so it s not like he ll be crying at 8 when Sandy and I can watch a movie together and try to take our minds off it No

  • Craft project: Ezra's Max costume | Making of a Family
the Wild Things Are After a few days googling infant max wild things costume I realized that I wasn t going to be happy with any of the ideas I was finding turn a grey sweatsuit inside out paint whiskers on his face and that I was going to have to make my baby a real Max suit A search through pattern books at JoAnn s turned up Simplicity 2537 which though that gingerbread man is terrifying seemed like it had the bare bones I needed a body suit a snowman hood that seemed amenable to the addition of pointy ears I went with flannel instead of fleece because I worried that fleece might be too hot at an indoor party Also because I totally didn t think I could pull this off it has sleeves for heaven s sake so I though cheaper fabric was a smart move Ezra is a hefty four month old 18 pounds and I found that the 1 2 size on the pattern which corresponds approximately to measurements I ve found for 12 month sizes worked fine for him especially since I wanted him to wear the costume over his clothes I m not a terribly careful or advanced sewer and I found this to be pretty doable The hood with its crazy shaped pieces and multiple darts seemed hard but once I figured out how to clip into the curves to make them stretch to fit each other i e once I remembered to follow the directions and schematics in the pattern it was cake For those of you playing along at home I made the following alterations to the pattern Made the velcro opening in front instead of back Skipped the turtleneck style neck band and just sewed down the neck edge
