  • Cribbing it | Making of a Family
I couldn t sleep that whole night Suddenly the prospect of nursing in bed which had seemed so comforting and convenient started to seem a little scary I could do it on my left side facing into the middle of the bed but on my right side I had to sit up or turn all the way around to put my head at the foot of the bed It was a hassle Plus we couldn t figure out where to put him I was terrified of blankets getting on his face or Sandy smushing him These things are all really small We could have found solutions But we didn t because it turned out he slept much better in his bouncy seat which held him at an angle Later when he outgrew the bouncy seat we discovered that he slept pretty well in the borrowed bassinet we put at the foot of our bed It worked for us for almost three months Then we went to New York and two things happened First we spent a few nights staying on an air mattress at my friend s apartment and it turned out that the best place to sleep Ezra was on a folded up quilt on the floor of the tiny office that opened off the living room He wasn t more than ten feet away but he was through a doorway and on the other side of the air conditioner and suddenly I couldn t hear his every grunt and snuffle I slept better and I liked it The second thing was that he outsmarted even my most creative swaddling attempts I had by that time resorted to putting him in footie pajamas and wrapping a velcro swaddling blanket just around his arms like a little straitjacket On our

  • Dear Ezra: Month Three | Making of a Family
thumb down yet but oh how you love those other four It s a sad day when one learns your parents won t always be there for you be it with a pacifier or a car so we re thankful you ve discovered this lesson early on and more importantly found a charming way to deal with it Speaking of finding things ever since you found your smile you haven t stopped This month with all your travel by subway you ve learned how to use it to flirt with strangers Lately smiling just doesn t cut it and if we re not paying you enough attention you shift into second gear chatterbox You LOVE the sound of your own voice Your parents love it too often to the dismay of fellow restaurant patrons so if your plan here is to express your discomfort you ve chosen the wrong strategy every time you speak up we sit and stare and smile in wonder While you re not yet dexterous enough to play me in chess you are learning how to grab things A few days ago you even pulled out your pacifier by its strap then PUT IT RIGHT BACK IN We stared in awe sure that it was a one in a million shot only to see you do it immediately again Chess may not be too far off So instead of board games we play Superman I hold you in the air belly down while you look around the world for a damsel to save I m very impatient for the days when I can throw you around and wrestle with you so in the meanwhile I m doing this warming up my muscles and at the same time getting you subconsciously ready It appears I don t

are apparently of steel which he shows off by doing crunches where he lifts his whole head up from the bed or bouncy seat Suddenly during tummy time he isn t just flipping his head from side to side wiping his nose on the mat but is pushing up holding his head off the blanket and looking from side to side It s not just his head and neck that amaze us this month He s quickly outgrowing his bassinet not exactly because he s so much taller but because he s no longer sleeping with his legs all curled up He flops them out stretching to his full 24 inches filling the rest of the space with his long arms if I forget to swaddle him He s alert in a completely different way than he was in his first month and his eyes focus better When he s on his play mat he gazes up at the crazy sun star contraption that plays tinny too fast Mozart while flashing lights at him smiling and giggling like it s telling him jokes On our camping trip I hung a blanket printed with sheep over his stroller to try to encourage a nap and 10 minutes later peeked inside to find him cheerfully chatting with his new sheep friends He loves to smile and we spend hours of every day coming up with little games to coax those amazing smiles out of him We both do the same thing with him in the bouncy chair holding his hands and using his outstretched arms to bounce the seat up and down though we each make a different crazy noise to go along with it I contend this game is called Motorcycle while Sandy thinks it should be called Machine Gun There

been meeting regularly for a homegrown mommy support group We ve tried La Leche League We ve taken yoga We ve gone to childbirth class reunions complete with novelty baby photos But like all things this too must change As September starts there s a back to school feeling in the air and it s suddenly back to work for my new mom friends coming to the end of their 12 week maternity leaves begun in June Of course many of my friends are working part time and there are always weekends but it will be different will require more planning to fit into increasingly complicated schedules Like all changes this one comes with some anxiety I wonder at my choice to stay at home full time worrying I ll get lonely or bored without all these daily diversions to occupy my time On the other hand there are things I love to do knitting sewing baking that I haven t had much time for these last few months and I m starting to figure out how to work them back into my routine I finally started a sweater for Ezra last weekend on our camping trip and today in
