  • Learning how to juggle | Making of a Family
leafing through the booklet Turned out we had all the parts I m sure there was some important hygienic reason to replace them but I made the executive decision that since I wasn t going to try to feed this milk to Ezra later I have nothing to store it in anyway I just wasn t going to worry about it A few minutes later I was pumping It was weird A motor hummed as light suction pulled my nipple and milk dribbled down into one of our motley assortment of garage sale bought bottles When I got to a whole ounce of milk I was amazed At almost two ounces I was kind of giddy with my own power I made that That s how I feed our baby As I swooned at my milk producing prowess Ezra woke up and wanted to nurse I keep thinking I m way better at this breastfeeding thing than I actually am so I tried valiantly to nurse him with one hand and pump with the other It didn t work out He started screaming In the midst of this minor chaos I was also trying to peck out instant messages to Sandy to finalize some evening plans That was the final straw What had been a stressful but manageable adventure in learning how to pump was turning into crazy town and I was about to burst into tears And suddenly what had seemed like a great plan to pack Ezra up and head to an outdoor movie in the evening began to seem like the hardest thing I was ever going to have to do That s how things go sometimes these days A crying baby makes everything seem a little more difficult Being alone with a crying baby makes things

  • Healthy and huge | Making of a Family
the two weeks since our last appointment At that visit he d been 9 lb 9 oz I was expecting about a pound gain average is about an ounce a day The nurse had me place him on the scale and we both said wow at the same time Ezra is now 11 lb 6 oz in the 95th percentile The doctor came in and took a look at the chart turned to me and said He wins Best gainer in the practice our boy is Want to know how to identify a sleep deprived new mom She s the one who comes to the appointment with a list of concerns jotted on a ripped half of a receipt and the list reads EYE TOE BOOB POOP The doctor assuaged all my concerns His goopy eye is a harmless and common tear duct blockage The gross toe blister is an ingrown toenail not flesh eating bacteria My bad right boob can be fixed by a call to the lactation consultant And Ezra s new every other day pooping plan is nothing to worry about In fact my compulsive googling had told me that many babies switch to a non daily

  • On 'Ezra' | Making of a Family
and Stanley in one house was a bit much So he got the middle name Instead we went with Ezra and the acronym Yes it s a bit silly but so are we especially when it comes to wordplay Might as well play to our strengths Plus we really liked the name Strangely we had it on the list in the very beginning but dropped it when we encountered some anecdotal evidence that it was becoming too popular We put it back on the list just a couple weeks before he was born realizing that it s silly to base the decision entirely on that factor A good name is a good name and this was a good name Ezra literally means helper Not that babies always live up to their name s meaning says me Sandor Defender of Man but we like the idea that he ll grow up with a sense of empathy and care toward his fellow humans Ezra was also a major player in the Old Testament He led the exiled Jews back from Babylon and led the building of the second temple in Jerusalem with the help of three Persian Kings named Cyrus Darius Artaxerxes sure to be the names of Ezra s three pet hamsters someday At the bris we gave him the nebrew name Zelig Avram also honoring the grandfathers mentioned above Zelig was Zoltan s hebrew middle name and Avram was Stanley s hebrew first name Plus I think it rhythmically matches his English name Those are the names as he s known by the state Then there are the names we actually use We re amassing a good collection growing everyday Often when I m holding him in my arms I ll lock eyes with him and try out a bunch

  • Watching | Making of a Family
in front of my eyes I don t know when he started settling into a pose we call senior class photo at the end of every feeding With his chin resting on one fist and his head on the other he appears to be carefully contemplating his future plans He has always shown he s getting hungry by sticking out his tongue but I think this variation is more recent he carefully looks off to the side before testing the air with his tongue as if to say I m totally not interested in your boob but if it just happened to show up in my mouth that would be cool Later when things are getting more serious he opens his mouth in a wide cockeyed way which somehow reminds me of a pirate Yar he says casting about for the nipple And he s definitely smiling more and more every day Not quite smiling at us yet but smiling a thousand watt smile into the middle distance It breaks my heart with its beauty We ve put up small mirrors next to his changing table and in the last few days we ve both noticed him starting to focus

  • Stay-At-Home-Mom: Week 1 | Making of a Family
m please to report that I succeeded It helped that most of the week Sandy stayed around the house until I was out of bed and dressed But that very first day when he left early I still totally worked it out Ezra went in the bouncy seat on the bathroom floor and I peeked out at him every few minutes proud of my shower taking technique Dates Ezra and I managed to get out of the house most days this week We walked to Lincoln Square twice to see other moms and babies meeting Claire and Veronica for coffee and meeting Anne and Ben at the Farmer s Market The stroller continues to be awesome and Ezra seems to really be able to relax in it Thursday I drove to my parents house in Evanston the longest drive I ve taken with Ezra alone It s hard to get used to having him back there where I cant see him and I have crazy paranoia about the carseat not being installed right Of course as expected the more times I drive him in the car the less freaked out I get It was nice to get out of the house and see people and I m going to have to make a point of planning a few visits every week Once my other new mom friends start going back to work it s going to get harder though I ve started researching mommy drop in groups and making lists of people I know who also stay at home or who work part time Television After two weeks of blissfully watching Ezra while he nurses I started to be ready for a little outside stimulation during some of the sessions I experimented with some Hulu on the computer in the
