  • Man to man | Making of a Family
as I ve taken a bit of a laissez faire tack to my preparation For me it s overwhelming There s too much information out there on How To Be A Father so my strategy has been to not read any of it and hope it comes naturally I m unjustifiably confident it will Of course it helps to have a woman by my side who has consumed all the books and who will certainly be the brains behind this parenting outfit This m o conforms with how we prepare for pretty much everything The bulk of the conversation however was spent talking about what to expect from the rest of my life my free time my hobbies my attention to work my dynamics with Sarah This stuff is going to get remixed and reshuffled and one rarely gets fair warning about it even though it can be the most disrupting I guess I ve taken the same attitude towards it as I have about the kid I ll figure it out as it comes but it s certainly good to hear first hand stories from a close friend I expect to fall back on those stories when I m

  • Third trimester | Making of a Family
I wake up tired with achy hips and some nights I m up for hours trying to get comfortable Perquackey often has the hiccups when I wake up accompanying my tossing and turning with a gentle but irritating internal drumbeat It s hard to remember that I have to slow down A few weekends ago we primed the baby s room It didn t feel terribly hard at the time But later that day feeling like I really needed some exercise since my yoga class had been cancelled I decided to walk to Levi and Stacey s two miles away It seemed like such a good idea It was not a good idea It took over an hour and it exhausted me completely Then this past Saturday we painted Perquackey s room I tried to tape the baseboards but kept forgetting that I can no longer lean over from the waist without feeling like I m going to suffocate And I must have really strained my hamstring without noticing because I woke up at about 5 00 on Sunday morning literally screaming in pain from a combination of the worst charley horse in history with tightness and pain up and

  • A rainy Sunday at Lazar's | Making of a Family
looking probably Jewish fellow who captured my attention so valiantly for thirty minutes that I neglected to catch the name on his tag so we ll just call him Arnie Arnie took a fractal like approach to salesmanship absorbing each of our questions and firing answers back at us in a way that left more questions than we had before We d try to focus in on a single decision and he d zoom back out and attempt to make us reconsider our whole approach It verged on mind numbing and it would have driven me crazy if wasn t obvious that he was probably right We had come in with a very precise idea that we wanted a car seat to stroller combo set It s de rigueur for new parents and seemed to make sense to us What Arnie was trying to get across was that we weren t considering our criteria very well Maybe that design isn t for us We re going to be doing a lot of neighborhood walking there won t be as much car to stroller transitions as if we lived in the burbs Our kid s probably going to be pretty big shortening the time a transitional car seat will be applicable Etc etc It felt very much like the afternoon we had our Dyson adoring minds blown by the savvy salesman at the vacuum shop We had a lot to learn Don t worry we didn t get sucked in We never came close to reaching for our wallets Arnie showed off some other strollers and we spent some time rolling them around seeing how truthfully they can be folded up with one hand The one that impressed most was the City Mini by Baby Jogger Seems good for the city

  • Baby needs a new pair of everything | Making of a Family
guess they assume enough of their customers are breeders that it s worth the screen real estate to put it on every page I clicked it Suddenly we had a baby registry one item deep I tweeted about it thinking how funny it d be to have a registry with nothing else on it Then a day passed and I thought about how my kid might want diapers and shit um I don t actually think he ll be for want of shit and thought maybe I should take this a little more seriously Then I realized I had no idea what that involves So this is a plea for advice from all the parents out there We ve got this baby shower thing coming up I ve been told people are going to buy us stuff and I ve been told if you don t tell them what you need you ll end up with 200 onesies and federal regulations state that a bungee cord tied bundle of onesies does not a car seat make I know this has been covered in other places a thousand times over I m sure there are books about it I m sure

the form of a baby doll and a hand knit replica of a uterus vagina and placenta and I guess my only complaint is as great as those are and they are fantastic espeically when she gets to employ the phrase detachable vagina her prop box doesn t extend beyond that Perhaps I m speaking too soon We haven t really gotten to breastfeeding yet Fingers crossed As far as practical exercises go we ve been taught a few techniques for easing the pains of childbirth They ve been mostly of the yogic and massage capacities Sarah seems to appreciate them though whether they ll have an effect in the delivery room is obviously still up in the air We haven t gotten into breathing techniques yet Fortunately we ve got a bona fide expert on our side in the form of ex Lamaze teacher Adrienne Sarah s mom so if we feel lacking in that area we know who to turn to Tonight s class was dominated by the screening of The Business of Being Born a documentary about the rise of medical births in America and the counterpoint of the home birth movement For this particular choir it was a bit of preaching but still a compelling reaffirmation of our attitudes toward the birthing process None of us in class are doing a home birth but we re all trying to make it as natural as possible It s stunning to me how strongly the trends in American births run antithetical to this idea It wasn t too long ago that it would have been a major struggle to use a midwife We re really quite fortunate that there s an ace midwifery practice not only in our healthcare network but mere blocks from our house The movies

  • Scenes from a hospital lobby | Making of a Family
much glucose Kool aid but with twice as much sugar It was as disgusting as it sounds Already starting to feel hungry I settled down in the lightest part of the hospital lobby for my first hour wait There seemed to be a piano playing somewhere and an old lady sitting near me was swaying A woman was carefully and methodically dusting every leaf on the huge ficus tree It was calm and quiet And then suddenly it was 9 00 and the place went crazy By the time I got back to the same area after my second blood test the lobby was really crowded A man who was either blind or crazy or both sat down right next to me and immediately began emptying the contents of his insulated lunch box muttering aw man aw man aw MAN Eventually he wandered off in search of his lost medication He was replaced by a series of people with disturbing guttural coughs After two hours I was hungry and starting to feel pretty icky The guttural coughing people left and a new crazy lady showed up with many friendly questions like What are you reading What s your name Delighted to have an excuse to move away I stood up to go get my third blood test and she noticed the bump You re having a baby When is it due My daughter was born in June points at deranged looking young woman standing near concierge You re so small You re so cute What s your name An older eastern European man sitting next to her looked up when she started asking about the baby Is boy cub he asked pointing at my belly Good Very good Back in the lobby for the last hour of waiting between blood

  • Baby's got back | Making of a Family
baby butt I was excited to be able to picture what he was doing in there But just a week later Perquackey decided to shake things up He started it on the plane to Austin for SXSW with an extra dose of kicking and wiggling After I arrived I started noticing more pushing and stretching and big baby lumps in unexpected locations During this time I met Dooce who is due the day after me and in a sort of nonsensical fangirl ramble told her all about it I used to feel his butt over here and now I feel it over here I love your blog By the time I was ready to go home he had completely realigned himself and settled in for some kind of major growth spurt Sandy and I can feel whole big pieces of him several times a day now even when he s not kicking and it s getting easier and easier to actually see his kicks from the outside Tuesday at the midwife his heartbeat was like a foot away from where we heard it two weeks ago So that s all awesome and I have to say the kicking and sticking out of his butt never gets old But there are some tradeoffs Like sleeping I ll go weeks at a time where I m able to sleep until 2 or 3 wake up briefly to turn over to my other side then sleep until 5 pee and go back to sleep until 7 or 8 That s a luxurious night s sleep for a pregnant lady by the way But every time Perquackey has a big growth spurt it messes me up for days until my body can adjust to the new bulk and location of our little visitor My

  • Stuff and all that stuff | Making of a Family
ruthless I was completely without ruth I whittled down those mountains of crap to little molehills of concentrated nostalgia It took a while to do partly because of the pure volume but also because I was forced to stop every few minutes and marvel at the things I found They ranged from the banal elementary school workbooks preserved wholly to the amazing receipt for my bris 75 cheap to the absurd a gold plated pinkie ring a bar mitzvah gift I kept the best stuff the stuff I want my kids to remember me by but threw out a good 80 90 of it Some of the stuff that didn t make the cut A pin from the Jack Kemp for President campaign coupled with a note I couldn t have done it without you It lost the election Happy to help Newspaper covers from after the Bulls fifth and sixth championships You know because of my magnificent love of basketball A bale of announcements of my birth which my parents printed in newspaper format I kept a few but really a bale A kaleidoscope with my bar mitzvah invitation embedded inside Add this to the category of I kept this for almost TWENTY YEARS Christ Another bar mitzvah gift a piece of granite with some Hebrew on it Sat in a box all these years Same category as previous Two programs from the Atlanta Olympics Enshrouded in a quilted pounch Each of these weighs like 3 pounds I had two Literally thousands of photographs many blurry and or of people I have no memory of I kept hundreds of good ones and all the negatives for once bulk negative scanning gets cheap but man I must be saving the foundation of our building with the amount I m throwing
