hopefully toward the door calling Mommy Mommy I love that you call us Mommy and Daddy by the way Ezra called us Mama and Dada right up until he started calling us by our first names which is a whole other issue Let s stick with Mommy and Daddy sweetie This month you have been demanding things a lot You want to walk instead of ride Or you want the front seat in the stroller instead of the baby seat down below Or you are at the fridge pointing up and asking for cheese tzeeee pulling on the freezer handle asking for frozen yogurt iiiiiiiice You shove books into my hands and seat yourself in my lap More you tell me urgently book Moooo baaaaa Nana brought over some mega giant pipe cleaners and you demand frequently in no uncertain terms that I wrap two no more no less around each ankle like grass hula anklets You are so brave constantly on the edge of playground structures or pools gearing up for one of your patented step off the edge trust falls As soon as you are in my arms you are demanding to be put back up so you can do it again And even when you are not feeling brave you cannot stop wanting to be brave We visited a horse farm in Harvard IL a few weeks ago and each time you got close enough to pat a horse on the head you completely freaked out and started screaming And as soon as I walked you a safe distance away you started pointing at the horse and urgently demanding more more We did it over and over again I had been wondering if you were ever going to love books and animal sounds and the intersection thereof

bush Ezra caught him and gobbled him up And he was delicious You are a masterful wordsmith constantly adapting phrases you hear us use to fit your needs Not always 100 accurately but always 100 adorably Me One more minute and then we ve got to leave the beach Ezra No We can t leave the beach That s the deal Sarah Me It s time for your quiet time now Ezra No First I m going to go potty and then Nana and Papa are coming over and then I can have quiet time Those are your choices Sarah Me Something Ezra doesn t want to hear Ezra What pauses for me to repeat What pause What Sarah What You are outgoing with strangers often telling them long stories about your day that I have to translate for them You recently started using this line on new friends My name is Ezra This is my friend Sandy What s your daddy called You like to point at Zella and say that s baby Zella You are fascinated by Zella and her new words and skills Zella said Mommy you ll tell me Zella climbed up on here with me You love playing with her right up until the moment you don t at which point it s all No Zella Stop followed by one or both of you screaming If I can teach you one thing in month 38 it will be the benefit of occasionally letting her play with something she has stolen from you happily independently out of your hair rather than trying to take it back tears wailing nobody can play While most days squabbling with Zella over trains aside end up being pretty fun the truth is that being three is also very very hard

his best outside voice you shriek louder To his great chagrin you are constantly causing tunnel cave ins by sitting obstinately on the edges of his beachfront civil engineering projects But I am fascinated by the ways you and he are different By this age he was completely obsessed with Bubbles the monkey as well as a large pile of other stuffed guys he was excited to see each day for his nap You are fairly indifferent to stuffed toys Happy to see a dog or bear or monkey or doll if one happens to be there but certainly not attached to one in particular Where Ezra probably knew ten animal names and noises by sight you are content with dog and woof woof so far Where Ezra has always been ambivalent about drawing you gravitate towards crayons and markers and paints I even think he s going to be a lefty and you a righty And you are still our water baby braver in the water than Ezra was at your age braver even than he is now You love the pool in particular Your dada taught you to put your face in and blow bubbles and when we sit in the shallow end you dip your face again and again giggling each time It s the tiniest bit terrifying how little fear you have about it but mostly heartening to know that instead of panicking you simply sit back up and grin You are still tough in the afternoons frequently rising from your nap only to scream in frustration and misery for an hour You don t want to be picked up put down fed nursed cuddled or ignored All options are equally the worst idea you ve ever heard I know it is a passing phase one

times or as you refer to any number of times more than one so many times You also got a special birthday ice cream at Ella s You have discovered that heat ice cream and you begin asking for it early and often each day While up in Baraboo we also went to the beach every day so many times and you got to see minnows and learn about making sand tunnels and waterfalls from the pre teens you attached yourself to And the trains There were many train related activities The Mid Continent Railway Museum s 55 minute long ride on antique coaches pulled by an old school diesel engine caboose and all was a huge hit Like you do you weren t giddy with excitement You were serious taking it all in You stared out the window pondering why the crossings only had lights and signs but no actual gates You explored the caboose at the turnaround peered under the cars moved from seat to seat to check out the different views Later at our campground you also got to ride on a mini train a series of wheeled and painted oil drums dragged by an ATV around the camp pathways Any train will do When we came back from the trip it was time for your birthday You ve been anticipating your birthday for a while now Someone would ask your age and you d say well you d say I m Ezra Then confused they would ask uh how are you and you d say I m two I ll be three in June on the 20th on my birthday It s funny to think how much of the birthday game has to be taught by parents conceivably without our incessant training you d let just

s concerned given that I was a very wee little girl too but the doctor did encourage me to fatten you up a bit before your next visit I m pretty sure she didn t use those words So avocados spoonfuls of peanut butter and lots of ice cream for you Ice cream actually saved the day for us last week when a bunch of your lazy teeth started another round of their year long trek to the surface We were out at a restaurant and you were inconsolable So I gathered you in my arms and walked you wailing all the way to Walgreens where I purchased some baby ibuprofen and an ice cream bar We sat on the hot concrete outside the store and you chomped and licked your way to messy happiness pausing only to wave and say hi to each confused patron who walked in or out Mid way through this month you went on a big adventure Your dada and I got a night to ourselves to celebrate ten years together and while Ezra went off on his own adventure to Grammy s house you spent the night with your doting Nana and Papa I was anxious Would you nap Would you go to bed Would you sleep through the night Would you be pleasant Would you eat I need not have worried By all reports you were a complete doll Thank you sweet girl for getting yourself invited back for a repeat visit sometime in the future I was mostly worried because sometimes you are difficult Sometimes you scream for an hour after your nap or refuse to eat anything I offer you or refuse to play with any toy that s not already in Ezra s hand Sometimes Ezra knocks you down or

scare once when you tore loose as we were leaving the zoo forcing us to spend a furious 2 minutes searching for you only to find you content in the corner of the gift shop studying dinosaur figurines That s as big as you like them though The life ish size animitronic Dino exhibit scared the bejeezus out of you Of course you also had your share of New Orleans cuisine most notably a couple of Cafe du Monde beignets Quote of the trip as we waited for our order on our second night there pointing around the table YOU don t need beignets and YOU don t need beignets and SHE doesn t need beignets I need beignets So we got you a souvenir shirt It says Beign YAY Right on cue this month you discovered an almost three year old s favorite word why You use it like it s going out of style I had mentally prepared for this moment assuring myself that when my son asked why I d reward his inquisitiveness with honesty and truth And I did just that for two days Then the novelty wore off and I came to love an old foe Because I said so I m no happier about it than you are trust me Just don t ask me why Speaking of Why why on Earth have you fallen in love with Dora the Explorer As educational TV shows go I can think of worse but this one is plenty bad And it doesn t help that it s really just a front for a multi billion dollar merchandising operation It s quite genius really carving a path to the parents wallets through a child s TV crush We only let you watch TV for a brief window

pregnant this time around and you re very content to keep right on nursing me up as much as you possibly can You re working hard on coming up with a word for it this week it sounds like Mana Mana and when you see me sit down on the rocking chair or any other likely nursing spot your face breaks out in hysterical joy It s adorable really if sometimes a little inconvenient Besides Mana Mana you re starting to say a lot of other words In New Orleans there was an afternoon where over the course of a few hours you started saying dog and woof woof very clearly You also like to quack like a duck say hi and bye and ask for a ball You occasionally seem to be saying water banana milk and a few other standbys But my very favorite expression for you to convey is yes You don t say yes or even nod your head When I ask you a question for which the answer is yes you simply burst into a face filling smile and sigh with delight I know this stage is fleeting in fact the sigh is already starting to morph into a sly chuckle an incipient nod But for now the feeling of having hot wired into your deepest wishes is addictive Do you want to nurse Aaaaaaaaaahhh I am excited for you to learn more words and get better at conveying the specific things you want because this has also been a month full of great anguished wails of unfulfilled desires But when you do figure out how to convey your needs it s pretty cute You love wearing your rain coat around the house standing beneath it and pointing urgently until I get it down for

to a fault often happy to leave your parents sight without hesitation a trait I am both proud and ashamed of having nurtured One day this fearlessness bit us back in a almost tragic way We were putting you down to bed and found that your favoritest monkey Popo who is always with you at bedtime was gone We turned over the house looking for him and came up empty Somehow we got you to sleep anyway with backup favorite Haha taking the reins As you slept we figured it out you must have taken him with you to the nearby park with your babysitter Herminia earlier that day Nine hours had already passed so we were not hopeful Mama s quick search the next day turned up nothing We considered our options Do we order another Popo from Amazon Do we sit you down and explain the ephemeral nature of things We punted and said Popo was on vacation Then a miracle occurred Despite our fruitless searching Herminia had gone to the park herself and hunted for Popo And she found him She appeared at the door with monkey in hand but the drama of it all was completely lost on you As were any lessons as you blithely tried to take him out again the next day What could go wrong The complexity of your language skills continues to mature It s just slow enough that it seems smooth to two of us who talk with you every day but even to your nana and papa and grammy your improvements from week to week are vast Prepositional phrases that weren t there before suddenly show up Recently you started to conjugate verbs properly and you even have begun to understand complicated differences like so many vs so much
