the parenthood The pets The photography The possessions the pregnancies The relationship the talking The travelling The wedding RSS Atom Sunday May 25 2008 By Sandy The Way Wii Roll In retrospect I m not clear what drove me to buy a Wii other than I finally simply could Wiis have been scarce from the begining It requires a little bit of luck or a willingness to pay a premium in order to get one I opted for the former deferring my decision to fate which was embodied in a the two or three Wii tracking systems I subscribed to For six months or so I d receive an alert only to find that clicking the link to Amazon or wherever resulted in an Out of Stock message And then one day last week for the first and last time that message turned into an Add to Cart button Four days later I had a Wii I realize the unsoundness of this decision making but in my world simply finding a way to make a decision is reason enough to be happy The concern now turned to Sarah and how much she d freak out The last thing she wants is me spending countless hours frying my brain in front of the TV Frankly it s the last thing I want as well but one can t always control one s impulses Turns out I d read her all wrong She was thrilled Let the record show that she went so far as to call me the best husband ever Who knew she had this secret love of video games Now we re looking at a situation where she may play more often than me It s possible I created a monster When you re a kid you dream about

got deeper into the book No such luck It was all foreign I effectively got to read it for first time again Strike one for the effectiveness of high school English Given that this book consistently tops Greatest American Novel lists I expected to be bowled over and perhaps that was a little unfair My reaction was more tempered It certainly was a pleasure to read I did eat it up in one afternoon but I struggled to see why the high praise Yet as I do whenever I miss something in literature I placed the blame entirely at my own feet More specifically the feet of my 15 year old self sitting in English class rolling his eyes and thinking he d rather be in math class Strike two Fortunately for me I never leave home without my own personal Harvard grad Over dinner that night I prodded her with questions and got a brief lesson in the beauty and brilliance of Gatsby It made the experience of reading the book much richer Yet I remained frustrated for not having the skills to get this stuff on my own Sarah proposed an idea we form our own two person book club We d read the same book at the same time at roughly the same pace and talk it out over dinners and shared L trips That was a couple months ago We finally got a chance to call the first meeting of our club last week with a book we d heard great things about The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz I thought it d be a good choice since it won the Pulitzer and the Rooster and there was a good chance that at least one of us would find it equally compelling

a shark Getting my bone replaced with Adamantium Just a few of the many possibilities that do NOT explain why my left forearm is wrapped in a new stunningly solid fiberglass cast None of these are true yet they re all full pay grades better than the honest truth I know because every time I m asked what happened and I naively launch into the story as it really happened I m met with stares of disappointment and pity Then those stares morph into wide eyes and out come suggestions for something better something that involves a much higher risk of death something that justifies the careless sacrifice of healthy bone structure In the interest of historical record here is the god s honest truth no exaggeration I fell off my bike I was accelerating from a stop up a slight incline shifting my weight from pedal to pedal Rather dramatically No one was around and I was close to my destination and I was a little bored A few seconds and a patch of loose gravel later my wheel slipped and I was flying toward the earth with nothing to save me but my instincts These instincts are the same ones I spend hours every day honing and preventing me from falling prey to my inner klutz In this case though the best it could come up with was Put out your hand fool Crunch The pain was immediate but I honestly thought it might be a sprain I iced it for a day and took a healthy regimen of painkillers but a day later it was no better So that afternoon I and my high deductible insurance plan walked into an orthopedist s office and got x rayed Diagnosis a minor chip to the tiny lunate bone Six
