  • Dear Zella: Month Fourteen | Making of a Family
a baby doll Here Zella he tells you as he pushes something into your hands Sometimes you protest certain that the thing you ve got is the thing you need but if anyone can get you to let go it s Ezra He s got a way with you when he turns on the charm I ve started asking him to help you stop crying and love finding you giggling as he tickles and smushes you to distraction You were a doll on the first night of Passover following your older cousins around the house like a tiny polka dotted duckling By the second night however you were tired of all the noise and chaos and matzo You are a bit more sensitive than Ezra was to disruptions in your routine a bit more fearful of new faces a bit more frightened of dogs I have to attune myself to your needs in a different way and I don t always do the best job of it I promise to keep working on it You re working hard yourself on finding some words and signs to express yourself so we know what you need You have picked up the sign for more but you use it to mean one thing only more frozen blueberries You toddle over to the freezer pull on it and then turn your giant saucer eyes up to me and blink hopefully as you sign more over and over again waiting for your favorite purple treat You also wave hi and bye and blow kisses and use nods and head shakes with vigor though the associated words are still pretty indistinct But your receptive vocabulary is growing by leaps and bounds You heard us talking about your hair and began pulling on it You act out

you read along and memorize phrases on all the pages of your favorite books Even the way you sometimes stutter a little bit but always push through to finish your thought You ve weirdly developed a fetish for the color purple One might think this was born of my Northwestern pride but I don t actually have much I actually kinda hate purple Maybe Mom put you up to it just to goad me She does seem to revel in this fetish the same way she revels anytime you say something in Hebrew You ve gotten to watch more movies lately This is both prescriptive and reactive On the one hand I want you to get to know the classics and appreciate them On the other I want to steer you away from those mindless terrible Thomas and Dora shows So we started with The Iron Giant Adorable kid loveable giant robot what could go wrong Turn it off you demanded and continue to demand every time I put it on Too scary Next up The Secret of NIMH I remembered this being a cute movie about cute mice Whoops it s full of terror and scary owls And you ve seen it four times already Please can we watch mouse movie Dada Between that and your quick adoption of The Goonies into your personal canon I m pretty pleased As for games one of your favorite is the Sleeping Tickle Monster Game something we inherited from Papa Syd who would play it with Mama whe she was a kid The way it goes is that one of us chases you captures you and holds you tight then exhausted from the chase falls asleep with you in her arms You escape the monster wakes up and the game starts anew

over into a serious case of the clings If I am in sight I must also be in reach or tragic tears will ensue Tragic tears are also on tap in cases of non mama things you want to hold but cannot reach my phone my ice water a red pen It is amazing to watch your whole body tense up as you try to express what it is you are reaching for to see the tears begin to well up hear the anguished cries and then see the tension drain in an instant once you figure out how to get the object of your desire Sometimes you even audibly sigh Speaking of the object of your desire someone clearly showed you the secret memo about how after babies turn one their moms sometimes try to nurse them a little less In response you have stepped up your game You have been known to pull my shirt completely down in public places to make huge lunging dives from my shoulder to my breast when I m not paying attention and to bite my nose hard to bring attention to the boob free state of your hungry mouth This month has been a complicated one for you with sleeping You are almost but not quite sleeping completely through the night You still have a fondness for a 4am snack and you sometimes like to get up for the day at 5 30 On those early mornings you and I cuddle on the couch by which I mean I doze while you climb around on me bashing my face with remote controls and pulling on my shirt so I ll nurse you more And the skipped naps Oh don t get me started about those I forgot about this utterly evil developmental

which we mostly play on record Is your favorite song the upbeat I Want You Back Or the perennial list topper ABC No you dig the slow jam Never Can Say Goodbye Meanwhile you dance to the beat of your own drummer with something out of the Benny Hill playbook It s completely disconnected from the rhythm of the song But it s your own thing who are we to say you re doing it wrong You re also been able to pick up on lyrics often just after a few listens We ll frequently catch you singing Justin Roberts songs to yourself just before bed or in the backseat when your attention drifts off and you forget we can hear you It s amazing to see you pick up on the patterns within the songs and adapting them to your own preferences Where is Thumbkin turned into Where is Uno with Dos Tres Quatro following up in later verses The big adventure this month was a trip down to see Papa Pete and family in Florida You did great on the plane where for the first time you got to sit on the plane sans car seat This meant learning self restraint about keeping the tray table up and your seat belt closed We stuffed Popo in there with you because after all monkeys need to fly safely too For the rest of the time we cashed in our patience chips and handed you the iPad to keep you busy while we tried to rest Florida itself was wonderful despite your being burdened with a minor cold the whole time you were there You ve got a tepid relationship with water only venturing in after you ve had some time to get used to the idea Much more to

by watching and imitating and figuring things out on your own A special and magical year This month you have quietly begun doing all sorts of things that I now remember working so hard to teach Ezra You suddenly give giant open mouthed kisses full of tongue and ringed with your four tiny teeth Just a few days into our new bedtime book routine you are already eagerly gumming the book to give the animals a goodnight kiss At Ezra s gymnastics class a few weeks ago you revealed that you understood how to get to the edge of something turn around and shimmy down on your tummy Eager to help you develop your walking skills we got you a push cart toy a few weeks ago You do love pushing it across the room walking in a funny twisted sidestep that veers you into the wall every time but what you really love to do is to climb into the cart and hold its handle from the inside By pulling and pushing the slightly jiggly handle and bouncing yourself up and down you can slowly but surely get yourself rolling Usually backwards Usually right into something Then a few weeks ago distracted in a massive crowd of families at a concert you stood for a few seconds rocking to keep your balance and then took three tiny steps You re still not consistently interested in walking but you re getting there with a few steps here and there each day You re onto my tricks though When you raise your hands up to me to be picked up I sometimes try to grab them and pull you to standing When you see me trying that you immediately hide your hands cry out then stretch them up again so I

burrowed back down That actually happens a lot Things you ve been exposed to melodies lyrics or lines from books will seem to have no impression for weeks and then suddenly one day we ll hear you in the back seat saying them out loud to yourself On a cold Christmas Eve when the whole city was shut down we took a trip down to the Museum of Science and Industry We expected you to bliss out on all the trains and we were not disappointed You seemed idly interested in the decommissioned actual trains but it was the expansive model train layout that really melted your heart Once your eyes latched onto that there was no peeling you away You could have stayed there for hours You did stay there for hours We tried pulling you into the colorful whimsical Dr Seuss exhibit and you lasted all of 10 minutes before you began wondering What the heck am I doing NOT LOOKING AT TRAINS So in other words we ll be going back Your other obsession Magna tiles You first encountered them at a party where some big kids were playing with them They let you into their circle and taught you how they worked and you were hooked A week later cousin Caroline generously gave you a set In one week of playing you must have advanced three grade levels in geometry color shape and architecture You say things like Look at me I m making a sailboat Or This is a house for the horses You are almost scarily smart with them and it makes me so excited to see what you will do with Legos once we re past the choking hazard phase and can bring them into the house There was one more star toy this month the big box When a co worker got something delivered in a 3 x 3 x 3 box I had a hunch it would be a big hit at home I was more right than I knew That thing enraptured both you and your sister for hours over the course of a few weeks It was basically a cardboard babysitter You hid in it you threw your guys in it you drew on it you poked holes in it you may have travelled through time in it for all I know It hasn t been all smiles and roses though We ve encountered a side of you that frankly is more confusing than anything and leaves us at a loss You have this tendency to push your sister over and crush her It appears to be an act of love not aggression but despite our pleadings and her wailing you aren t getting the message that it ain t right It doesn t seem to be borne of a lack of attention as you ll do it even while we re interacting with you This is the first real test we ve had about bad behavior that has
