the new tricks The obsessions the parenthood The pets The photography The possessions the pregnancies The relationship the talking The travelling The wedding RSS Atom Monday August 8 2005 By Sandy First Blogiversary Happy birthday to us August 8 2004 a signing of a piece of paper and Sarah and I take our first step down the gilded lane of home co ownership To commemorate the event we become co owners of another more virtual home this blog 365 days and 124 posts later we re still going strong I wasn t sure in the beginning if we d be able to bring ourselves to keep it going much less have enough interesting things to talk about Turns out that co habitation provides ample fodder for journaling albeit with varying levels of interestingness The intention all along hasn t been just to offer friends and family progress reports on us though that has been a nice result I wanted to create a record of the first days of our living together as a scrapbook to look back on As those first days have progressed into months and now years I hope we can keep this going in perpetuity both for

were open No pre engagement niceties were around to hold us back now Among the discussions What kind of wedding do you want to have As I understand it all twelve year old girls fantasize about their dream weddings and in the years following build upon that dream until it s an inflexible ideal best not contested by mortals Meanwhile normal boys are too busy fantasizing about other dreams to focus on wedding plans That didn t stop me abnormal from the get go from coming up with an idea or two over the years As we both creaked open these memory chests we advanced lightly throwing out morsels of ideas one at a time Neither of us wanted to risk deflating that emotional high with some petty wedding planning conflict The good news is that tradition and pomp ranks fairly low on both of our priority lists mine lower than hers so we re both open to challenging all manner of your typical wedding customs Whether we can make it fly with our families that s a different story We ll be sure to tell it when it begins to unravel What will our last names be Even before I met Sarah I never presumed thath my eventual wife would take my name How quaint how traditional Not to mention unfair I wouldn t consider changing my name to hers so why the other way around I certainly didn t like the other possibilities any better hyphened a mash up a new one entirely so the only option was to leave it as is But as we were now able to discuss this presents identity troubles for our yet to be kids As we thought about it and did a mental survey of our friends situations we realized all

my mom s engagement ring was a simple silver setting of an orange carnelian Very hippie chic and lovely She gave it to me a few years ago and I wear it pretty often Somehow this ring instilled in me a very important value for my new engagement I don t need a diamond This is important because there was seriously no way in hell that Sandy was going to be involved in buying me a diamond When he asked me to marry him and asked if I wanted a ring if I had said yes and it better be a HUGE diamond I m pretty sure the engagement would have been off Not kidding It s not that I ve got anything particularly against diamonds er except for that whole slave labor thing I ve seen them used very tastefully for many engagements over the years People we know and love and respect have very lovely diamond rings But there was one moment a few years ago where I thought if this is what wanting a diamond looks like I SO don t want a diamond J was a friend of a friend from high school She met a fellow from Houston at a wedding and started dating him long distance After a few months she decided it was time to get engaged and began demanding a ring Not his undying love and endless affection A ring It took a few months but finally he delivered As soon as the ring was on her finger she scanned her hand and emailed the photo to all her friends It s not that big in the picture but in real life it s HUGE she wrote Ah young love So no diamond for me Instead we found a beautiful and unique

Atom Wednesday July 27 2005 By Sandy Yes The air was cool in a cozy sort of way It had rained much of the day leaving the ground moist and pliable As we walked up the hills of the farmland we maneuvered around cowpies and the endposts of electric fences When we reached the peak we turned around and took it all in the rolling hills of the Wisconsin countryside the setting sun the wispy remanants of the day s rainclouds It slowly began to get dark We must have sat there for ten minutes maybe twenty We said nothing just held each other watching the day turn into night Thoughts started to race about the perfection of the moment and the desire to hold on to it forever Just like that I realized there was something I wanted to say A moment earlier it hadn t been there then suddenly it was It took all the courage I had to make the words appear Let s get married Sarah turned to me an expression of wonder and joy splashed across her face In that moment if there was the tiniest sliver of doubt left in mind it was eviscerated Any trepidation proved itself to be completely unwarranted My future in that moment was as clear as ever it s going to be amazing Really Yes Marry me Okay The next minutes hours days have been wonderous The love has been bursting from all sides From each other from friends and family from the strangers we meet who sense the joy we feel There are conversations that have been lying in wait inside us waiting for this time and it s been such a thrill to be able to finally speak them When we re together we can t help

tricks The obsessions the parenthood The pets The photography The possessions the pregnancies The relationship the talking The travelling The wedding RSS Atom Monday July 25 2005 By Sarah Garden Update 5 Murder in the Garden I ll start with the good news first The tomatoes are about to lose control and I think I like it We ve already been able to harvest enough grape tomatoes to make a pasta dish and hundreds are waiting in the wings Romas are ripening as we speak There are green beans everywhere Gumdrop the first harvest of the season Some of our herbs continue to amaze We have a thyme bush next to a tarragon tree and a luscious forest of parsley But some of the herbs aren t doing so well Whether they ve been wilted by heat strangled by the monstrous pumpkin plant or just went to seed too soon we ve had to say goodbye to the cilantro chives and dill I have a feeling I ll be replanting some of those this weekend OK so here s the sad story Remember back when we were planting how we dug up the little girl s garden and then replanted it for her in her own little third of the plot All has been well so far Her third is bursting with flowers and vegetables and in the back sunflowers Now these sunflowers were getting really tall Like 8 feet tall And they hadn t exactly bloomed yet But they were healthy and strong and anchored her side of the garden When we came home from Wisconsin yesterday we noticed immediately that they were gone We saw one of our neighbors later that evening and asked if he knew what had happened to them Did the rainstorm break them down

condo building for as long as it s been a condo building He served as board president for the first four years Now he serves as sort of a president emeritus position After about a day of phone tag we finally connected His urgent message he wanted me to become the new board treasurer The current treasurer just surprised everyone by announcing his family was moving out Out of town actually way out of town His is the second family to put their place for sale this summer and it s possible there ll be a third This kind of large scale upheaval is unusual for any condo building and ours espeically My impression is that normal rate of turnover is about one condo per year Suddenly we ll be going from the building s freshmen to grizzled veterans all within a year A year ago I was terrified at the amount of responsibilty I d suddenly have to shoulder with ownership The thought that new first timers might be turning to me for advice is more terrifying still So when I heard the recommendation that I become treasurer my first thought was not on your life mister At least that was the stock answer I had ready for when he asked because I felt the suggestion was coming There aren t many people in the building who d be likely treasurer candidates so the chances they d turn to me seemed high But when he asked a wave of guilt came over me and forced my stock answer to shirk into the background revealing this guy Yeah that sounds fun Fun What about a volunteer job balancing other people s books sounds fun Stressful sure Magnet for resentment absolutely I ll even concede lesson in something pratical But it
