live but it s no picnic having them taken away And so it was with a bittersweet disposition that we approached our housecooling party yesterday We had spent weeks coming to terms with letting go of so much of our stuff our sweet beloved stuff and yet so many times during the party we had to deal with Are you really getting rid of this great thing and I can t believe you don t want this It was all we could do not to grab it all back and hide it under the bed The weekend leading up to the party was spent turning my house into a flea market As we wanted these items to move move MOVE we made it simple for our guests First we hid the shelves of stuff we wanted to keep behind protective paper at that point we were in a position to say If you can see it and pick it up you can take it If it was on a shelf or piece of furniture it was free to go We were courting people s inner klepto That included about a dozen shelves of books a bed topped with clothes and gobs and gobs of kitchen tools That was half the weekend The other half was a marathon of cooking and prepping To me this is the best part of party throwing and this is why I m so stoked about the large kitchen we ll get to play with in the new place We had three categories finger food grilled food and things that need a plate Obviously there was overlap but that s why God invented cross referencing Just a sample of what we made dolma three kinds of bruchetta beef kabobs molasses cookies veggie cakes I d go

travelling The wedding RSS Atom Thursday September 2 2004 By Sandy Purge and merge I ve been in the stuff collecting business for about 25 years You could say I was born into it I ve really only come into my own in the last 10 since I started practicing solo But even in that short time I ve surpassed my pedigree s wildest expections Friends who ve moved me anytime since college began can attest I m an Olympic caliber pack rat So I ve been due for a good excuse to cleanse myself for a long time now With the impending merging of properties that excuse presented itself loudly and clearly We bring you Purging Weekend Wherein our contestants have two days to sort through all of their earthly belongings and relegate all that is unholy to the recycle heap He or she who sheds the most gets dubbed the Purging God and is treated to a three course meal and a bottle of Ipecac I went first You would be AMAZED with the amount of crap I never thought I could do without Unless you re an old roommate in which case you re following just fine Broken answering machines Shirts unworn since a Democratic presidency Books from college courses that I never read the first time around But then came Saturday when the spirit of minimalism seized me and shook those demons loose Out unused crap they said Find yourself a better home The next morning the same spirit took over Sarah It was just as exhausting and fortunately no one was left crying in a corner Except for those pesky demons Which brings us to this coming weekend and the occasion of the final party for either of us as renters We re calling it

One by One When I was little my room used to get unbelievably messy By the end of each week clothes would be tangled in webs all over the floor books would be piled in corners dolls were everywhere I would bravely attack it each and every week as part of my parents ingenious earn your allowance plan 1 00 for cleaning your room 50 for feeding the cat etc And each and every week I would wind up huddled in the corner crying My dad would peek into the room and say Honey do you need some help I would wipe my eyes and nod Here s how he helped He would lay down on my bed point at something and say What s that Pick it up Put it where it goes over and over and over again I just read an advance copy of Malcom Gladwell s new book Blink about the way we can make decisions in the blink of an eye One of the most interesting sections of the book to me was where he talked about how sometimes too much information can cloud decision making and shut us down Sometimes we re only able to make quick effective decisions when the amount of information we can access is limited That s what my dad was doing I was crying because the sheer amount of things in my room that needed to be somewhere else was totally overwhelming I couldn t decide about any of them because I couldn t even figure out where to start So he would pick one thing a sock a book a doll and limit me to just thinking about that one thing I would make one decision and then another and then another This weekend we started purging all

Nineteen for you one for me You know what s confusing Property taxes is confusing Holy bejesus is it confusing This may be old news to those of you who ve already been through the blood letting I mean home buying process but it s all exciting and fresh to Mr Newbie here I m shocked I can talk about this it all but thanks to my attorney never thought I d utter those words I m a smidgen more clear on it now than I was yesterday Here goes The property taxes listed on the spec sheet for our new condo were for the year 2002 You may recall that that year ended almost 20 months ago and yet it s the latest data Realtors have for the properties they re selling The reason for this is and this is where it starts to get kooky taxes are assessed and paid in arrears meaning people are just getting around now 8 months later to learning what last year s taxes will be and paying them Okay who cares as long as it s paid right Not so fast cowboy There s the problem of who gets to pay the 2004 taxes up till now Pause Breathe See technically the current owners should pay those taxes But they ll be well established members of whatever Cayman Island community they land in by the time we learn a year from now what the full total of those taxes are Relying on these individuals to be responsible and cough up their share is apparently a big real estate no no so now it s up to the attorneys on both sides to figure out a fair estimate of what they ll be Since the state or is it the county is in
