is successful see toys sometimes less so see nursing my chin This month we invested in an exersaucer and you love half standing in it investigating the toys and slowly rotating around Ron Swanson style As you ve gotten older and the weather s gotten better we ve started going on even more fun adventures You ve been to the aquarium all the local parks and a bunch of parties We ve been to the beach almost every week this month and have taken a few trips to the pool You ve been great about napping in your stroller or in the Ergo and have even been a sport about nursing under a blanket so I can keep your face out of the sun This week we finally bought a giant yuppie sun shelter to set up at the beach so now you can roll around and grasp at your toys in peace even in your too young for sunscreen condition Your brother remains mostly a source of great amusement for you Your eyes light up when he comes around squatting over you with a mischievous grin and asking if you re Aweek Aweek Occasionally you are not awake which sometimes leads to Ezra squealing his crazy wake up squeal and jolting you out of sleep up in tears But mostly it leads to giggles On your fourth monthaversary we were in Massachusetts On your fifth we were in Wisconsin While we prided ourselves on taking your brother camping twice each of his first two summers we simply could not figure out how to do it with both of you Your dad says that this is just a space problem our gear won t fit in the Fit but I ll confess that I was intimidated by the prospect of

suckers I have started hearing suspicious noises from his room during naptime and occasionally walk in on him in a state of extreme mischief Once he discovered that through sheer force of will he could put naptime up for grabs he started chipping away at bedtime formerly a magical time of goodwill He got demanding suddenly he was starving every night right as the lights went out and only a specific song would do Then suddenly after months of waking up just once a night Zella started getting up two three four times each night and wanting to nurse for long luxurious stretches of time I became delirious from sleep deprivation pretty quickly Even so something about this seemed familiar Eventually I remembered Or more accurately I did a search of my old emails and chat transcripts Turns out it was a hard couple of months back in October 09 as Ezra and his pals went through some developmental leaps that made sleeping hard Rolling over onto their tummies and waking up surprised and scared for instance It s an actual internet verified thing this four month sleep regression So we re experimenting with tummy sleeping now that Zella is flipping over with ease and she does seem to like to sleep that way Unfortunately her precocious flipping skills came hand in hand with some proto crawling in which she will scooch her head right into the corner of the bassinet a location she finds decidedly unpleasant When Ezra went through this one thing that helped me was to move him to his own room so I wouldn t wake up from his every snort and snuffle as he moved himself all around Unfortunately for me and for Zella she s stuck in her tiny bassinet until we can figure

with watermelon There was only one skinned knee And there were cousins So Many Cousins Here for instance you see our kids with their second cousins from both sides of my family Not all of them mind you This is just 2 3 of them Mostly boys as you can see and Ezra enjoyed watching them play dodgeball and learned new tricks for train and water mayhem But I have to give a special shout out to the girls today That s Chava almost 9 holding Zella as she did for approximately every moment she possibly could both times we saw her this weekend When I would take her back for a diaper change or feeding or hand her to another cousin for a moment you could almost see Chava counting to ten in her head before asking can I hold her again And that s Meira 5 upon whose head Ezra is drumming Each time she turned around to bust him he would put his hand on his chest as if to say who me and she would giggle and turn back around so he could start again One of my very favorite things about living in Chicago is

is I need that or I need followed by whatever it is you think you need Your choice of need is probably only a function of it being easier to say than want or would like to have so we try not to take this as a sign of your impending insolence Usually we can get you to repeat the request with please and followed by thank you eetoo which we count as something Mom has noticed that you have a bit of a Swedish tic in your speech When we ll ask if you want something in particular like a book you ll say Book ya book with this easygoing Scandinavian lilt to your voice It s super charming You ve solidly embraced your new bed over the last month often keeping to it during nighttimes and naps and only rarely splaying yourself out on the floor instead For your birthday Grandma Amy made you and extraordinary quilt for it the fabric is festooned with images of monkeys riding on boats made of bananas Every night we have a routine you lay down under the quilt with your head on the matching little pillow and I lay down next to you We read a book or two usually Chicka Chicka Boom Boom which you call Boom Boom and Flat Stanley which you call Hey look the first two words of the story Then because I don t trust my singing voice I pull out my iPhone and play you a song While you were in your crib any song would do but not any more You ve honed in one and you can t go to bed without it It s Madeleine Peyroux s gorgeous cover of You re Going To Make Me Lonesome When You Go I ve

sometimes you get frustrated that you can t smile any wider Lately you pair the smile with throaty giggles gee go gee go gee go is one of Ezra s newest phrases which he repeats while tickling your belly or wild squeals The squeals combined with the mohawk that just won t quit even as the rest of your hair thins out are extremely punk rock and I like it A few weeks ago a heat wave rolled through town and I decided to brave the beach with you and your brother We met a friend and her sons there so at least there would be another adult on hand Still wrangling a wily toddler and a crying baby in 95 degree heat among hundreds of strangers seemed daunting and I was anxious about shielding you from the sun since you re still a bit young for sunscreen But you were a dream pleasantly nursing yourself to sleep under a blanket so I could keep you out of the sun and then snuggling into the stroller for a long nap You ve been remarkably flexible with me about those naps Once in a long while you get to take a morning nap at home but mostly those are on the run Afternoons I usually try to force you to sleep while your brother is napping so I can have a little while on my own to get a few things like this blog post done It s not always exactly when you want to sleep but you re persuadable I was terrified that once I stopped swaddling you you d wake up constantly but you ve proven me wrong sucking on your fists to calm yourself down or throwing your arms out to the sides This week I discovered a

spontaneously start sleeping there This is your new bed I told him Boo beh he replied Our first three nap attempts ended in various kinds of defeat most involving Ezra standing in the middle of his room wearing rainboots and yelling On the fourth day he slept Hilariously Then one night last week after Ezra had eagerly if ineptly napped in his new bed for a few days and after his Grandma Amy had come over with the downright amazing monkey quilt she made for Ezra s birthday Sandy decided to try to put him down for the night in the new bed After a few minutes his typical conversation with his bedtime companions began to get louder Then it started to sound a little hysterical Then he began knocking on the door I went into his room and found him quickly getting more and more awake I think you need to go back in your crib I told him gathering up his monkey team and blankets and heaving them in As I lay him and Popo down in the crib he kind of sighed with relief at being sent back to the minors The next night though when I tried the crib he was over it With renewed conviction he pointed at the new bed Boo beh he demanded New bed So we tried again Within minutes the volume rose and the knocking began Back into the room I went planning to do the same as the night before But this time as I threw the monkeys into the crib he clung to Popo and flung himself facedown on the bed So I decided to give it one more try This time it worked and my little man slept the whole night in his big boy bed We re

parts of your protective parents We haven t yet taught you all the rules of pedestrianism and to you the line between curb and street is a pretty illusory one We also have had to get in the habit of locking the back screen door otherwise you re over there in a flash reaching up on your tiptoes to flick the lever and bolt outside Suddenly this month we are in ownership of a surfeit of things on wheels for you to ride They are a plastic trike a classic Radio Flyer wagon a tiny bicycle with training wheels and a fancy wooden tricycle with no pedals that has the ability to convert into a two wheeler once you re ready for it You love riding any and all as long as it s heading in the direct of the nearest train station And let s not forget the limousine of this set the seat that rides on the back of my bike which you ve taken to with your typical obsessiveness clamoring for it once you catch a mere glimpse and going into fits if I turn you down These fits by the way I m not too pleased with and I let you know about it No crying I say which after weeks of practice you now interpret correctly as Stop the wailing look at Dada with puppy eyes and a grin and say please Which comes out as Beep And which frequently works I m chalking this one up as a win Speaking of obsessions your love of trains has only grown Mom and I thought we d test your limits by taking you to National Train Day at Union Station and seeing how many hours of trains was enough Whatever the answer is it s more than four That included 90 minutes of train riding time plus an hour or so of model train watching plus some time walking up and down the platforms and even a tour of an old Amtrak car After getting home did you fall soundly to sleep content in your train mainlining You did not You clamored for more like you were the most train deprived kid to ever live The episode has inspired me to take you on a long Amtrak trip My theory is that you ll be catatonic with glee the whole trip Your attitude toward your sister remains as I tell friends who ask mostly uninterested Her cries even when you re stuck two feet from them in the car s back seat fail to affect you at all Once in a while you ll point to her and say her name You ll ask for her in the mornings sometime but not before asking for the most important thing your daily banana i e nana It is almost without fail your very first word every day Once in a while while Mom isn t looking you ll take a cracker and attempt to feed it to
