  • Dear Zella: Month Three | Making of a Family
was still frequently up more than once a night and he liked to nurse for a long time You and I superstitiously hesitate to say this out loud to the internet wake up once a night for ten minutes and go right back to sleep Except for the night before mother s day of course You often nurse yourself to sleep but even when you are still a bit awake when I lay you down in the crib you seem to have missed the lesson at baby school where they tell you to cry inconsolably You just well go to sleep I m sure there are trials ahead but I am really enjoying feeling relaxed as I go to bed at night not worrying that I ll be up half the night Ezra is still a big fan of you He calls you Blella and he always knows where you are even in a crowded room or playground He asks to hold you and sometimes he even means it Some mornings we all cuddle together on our bed and he lays down next to you and puts his arm around you He helps with you shoving unwanted pacifiers into your mouth trying doggedly to feed you his snacks and rocking your car seat or swing as hard as he can while yelling Rock Rock We have a big extended family and they are in love with you A few weeks ago we celebrated Passover which in our family at least mine is the absolute craziest of all the holidays We went to our cousins house for a dinner with 30 people ten of them under ten The huge sofa was overrun with cousins and friends of cousins but your cousin Chava nine years old took charge of you She carefully

flowers on a white background gauzy and soft I ve been wanting to make myself a skirt out of it since day one and have never gotten to it So in anticipation of some awesome mommy daughter matchy matchy days this summer I m kicking off KCWC with a dress for Zella It s another Simplicity 3808 my go to dress A few problems First of all this fabric is old as hell Washed to death Falling apart I cut the pieces and then noticed two holes in the front So I examined the fabric found another good spot cut another front and immediately found another hole Front 3 appears to be hole free at least for now but I m now beginning to fear that this whole thing is going to simply dissolve as soon as it s done Also I ve never been 100 sold on the front pleats on the 3808 pattern I ve done em as written and I ve shirred instead and both work fine But I ve been trying to figure out something else that will make me happier I think it s going to be pintucks I practiced on the front with the

would have been enough If there had only been pee in your diaper instead of a huge poop when I stuck my hand in there like a total rookie it would have been enough If I had only sneezed once just as you were finally falling back asleep instead of five times it would have been enough And yet when you flashed your glorious impish grin at me at 3

the shopping cart at Target and in a car seat on the floor of my room after coming home from one of Ezra s playdates So whenever we get the great luxury of timing for her to take a serious nap I do it up There s some leisurely nursing during which I indulge in a little daytime Netflix some careful swaddling and a lullabye before I lay her gently

tub You re an awesome bath taker never complaining when I pour water on you or vigorously shampoo your hair and you re happy to hang out there for a little while I sit watching and relaxing You will also drop everything to go get the mail This is a complicated multi part endeavor First I hold your hand while you walk down the stairs Then I pick you up and hand you the keys from which you try to pick the one for the mail 33 success rate and fit it in the slot On our way back I throw the keys up the stairs which invariably lights up your eyes and causes you to chase after like a puppy dog after a treat Then it s five minutes of hi bye bye and door shutting and opening until I turn into the tickle monster and attack You re an increasingly hilarious little kid You picked up this habit a few months ago of putting your tiny feet in adult sized shoes and stomping around You clearly get how silly it is You put things on your head that are not hats and call them hat You chase us around the house and let us chase you You re a nutball sometimes and thank god because so am I and I wouldn t know how to handle it any other way You ve got one new habit that we re not crazy about however hilarious it is You have become adept at unzipping which means now every morning we come in to find you laying in your crib footsie pajamas unzipped all the way down to your crotch or feet It s an adorable beefcake look and I can see why you d want to do it The problem

  • When Sandy Gave Himself a Mickey | Making of a Family
managed to trick me In the fall of 1978 on our way from LA to San Francisco we decided to stop in Anaheim to introduce our toddler son to Disneyland After several no vacancy signs we found the perfect desert motel complete with grey cement floors and concrete walls topped with clearstory windows The lack of a view was balanced by one redeeming feature air conditioners loud enough to drown out nearby highway noise We all woke with Sandy at 6am the next morning eager for our one day with The Mouse Seeing me scurrying around preparing for our outing Sandy took his opportunity to explore the bathroom and Mom s emergency all medications a good mom might need on a trip bag By the time I found him he had unzipped the bag examined its contents and was merrily chugging the cough syrup Panic I m happy to remember did not ensue Instead we found the Anaheim Yellow Pages beneath the Gideon Bible and called the local emergency room where the following conversation began Nurse Poison control Mom My 22 month old just drank a half bottle of Robitussin I don t know how he got the cap off Nurse Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha They re the only ones who can Mom feeling slightly better After all if the nurse was laughing how bad could it be Will he be OK Nurse Oh sure It ll make him drowsy but after he sleeps a few hours he should have no problems Mom But we re only here for the day This is our only time for Disneyland Nurse more laughter Well when you get in the park a pinch on his inner thigh should wake him He might be groggy for a bit but that shouldn t last

  • Dear Zella: Month Two | Making of a Family
doing your best to make sure we don t forget about you You reject the bouncy seat and barely tolerate the swing a crafty strategy to get us to hold you all the time You love being held face down over my arm looking out at the world while I swing you back and forth You have also turned on the smiles faucet in the last few weeks flashing big grins as a reward to us for hair ruffling and face tickling And the cooing is starting for real now loud and insistent The smiles and coos were precisely what we noted about Ezra in his two month letter Another thing he was already losing his hair You on the other hand seem to be keeping yours I hope this means that I ll soon get to indulge in barrettes and bows You rocked your first dress at your baby naming and I m looking forward to all the gorgeous girly stuff I couldn t dress your brother in Of course I also frequently dress you in a suit covered in trucks and I swaddled you up for bed tonight in a really cute orange robot outfit Despite your intense adorability you have been frustrating us a tiny bit with your disinterest in taking a bottle The other day your nana reported that you seemed like you were drinking from the bottle really well but when she looked again at the milk you had somehow just been pretending to drink We are going to redouble our efforts this month because there are so many people who would like to spend time with you and it will be so much more fun for everyone when you are willing to be fed by them Ok ok also your dad and I would

know that that s what I want to hear when I say that prompt Maybe there s no difference For record keeping purposes here s a list of all words you can say as compiled by Mom and me just now Hello phone hat eat ee kitty byoo bird ola gorilla uno key choos shoes gock sock baby done all done mama dada Gaca Veronica Momo my me baybeu diaper choochoo peepee eye no nose nana banana or Nana Papa nock milk caco cracker wawa water chee cheese Haha Bubbo Popo your three favorite monkeys Elmo hi bye whee slide or spinning chair fwum drum bum spoon bow bath on uh oh oh no and yay And of course a bunch of animal sounds like meu mow woof roar neigh sssss and quack I have this vague memory of being 10 or so and sitting in a cafe with Grandma and Aunt Lilli writing down on a pad of paper all the words Uncle Oliver knew how to say He must have been around your age because the list was about this long I also remember how soon after that it became impossible to track them all Your twenty first month has seen development in other obvious ways like an increased demand for attention in the face of your tiny new competition This has manifested in the form of climbing on as much as you can tables chairs couches window sills bathroom sinks kitchen counters You ve just reached the dangerous combination of height and resourcefulness pushing a chair across the kitchen to allow you access that makes all this monkey business possible The upshot of all this is that Mom and I are getting a crash course in how to discipline We re not very good at it It s actually difficult for me to hold back laughter when I try to give you a time out both at the absurdity of my seriousness and the adorable way you scrunch up your face and pout You have also discovered the tantrum I think you re getting a head start on those terrible twos You break down for the most absurd things and again it s so difficult to take you seriously This weekend we spent a whole morning watching trains then when I took you home you spent minutes flat against the door wailing demanding me to take you back out to see more You were inconsolable You were so in love with those choo choos Turns out you were mostly just hungry and tired Your most mischievous moment was also your most clever We have this swing You used to swing it when you were a baby and now Zella does But if you find it empty you jump at the chance to sit in it and lounge despited being twice the max size and looking like a beached whale when you re upon it The other day while Zella was swinging peacefully you sat down next to
